So many people ignore the obvious and then think they are the victim when they chose to ignore the teal leaves

Summary

I've been coaching someone for not all that long and he just described a situation to me at work and I just want to hit them. I'll just simply say, "that's my stuff," because I've listened to this same story in different forms many many times. Here's what he's gone through. Him him him
He works for an organization. A new manager comes on. Now, this guy's reviews have all been extremely good. Everyone says positive things about him. New manager comes on. Starts hiring his own team of people from his last organization and this guy's just forced to hunker down. He's trying real hard.
It's kind of like in the restaurant business. You know, a new the owner is going to come in and suddenly the restaurant staff is in a frenzy. They are all trying to put on a good show for the owner who runs multiple restaurants and you pause for a second and go, "If you're worried about the restaurant, close."
Your performance on this one day, is it going to make a difference? The decision's already been made. Well, the same thing exists here. If, regardless of the person's performance, that decisions already been made. What he chose to do is hunker down and do a good job and not really focus on the relationship with his boss or with the fact that his boss was hiring people that he already knows.
So, I just want to point out to you some of the insanity that many of us do, and I know I've made this mistake myself. It's part of the reason I can recognize this and, you know, I learned my lesson years ago about this.
The first thing you have to do really is pay attention to your relationship with the boss. Even in an existing organization where there has been no change in your relationship with your manager is really pivotal because they dictate whether or not should get the plum assignments, whether you get support and moving up, moving ahead, things along those lines, If they are trying to hire from the outside,it is an indicator there that you don't really have a future here and, thus, it's time to start looking. at. So, always focus on your relationship with your manager.
Also think in terms of those, your manager does your managers manager think of you, as the expert experts often are seen as indispensable?
I always think in terms of what can you do to present yourself as "world class." Now the notion of being world class can't suddenly start when you feel threatened. You have to always think in terms of your organization and how you're perceived. How you're seen .
As a result, to not see yourself in that way, you're leaving yourself vulnerable or because if you don't see it, they sure don't.
Then, you have to ask yourself a question. The question really is, "why should we keep you?" What is it about your performance that makes you unique in the organization . . . and it's not just to simply say, "I'm a good worker, I'm always there on time. . . . and words to that effect. There are a lot of good employees out there who will also be there on time. What can you do that's special? What makes you world class and distinguishes you from others? If you can't answer that question, you are dispensable and it's no surprise that this individual who I coach suddenly finds himself on the outside.
And, really the only thing that you can do at a time like this is start hunkering down. And then go to your boss and say, "I've got to apologize to you. I've been off my game for a little while. But if you haven't noticed, I feel like a back again, and giving you the kind of effort and results that you've been expecting. I apologize for this period of time. I've had some struggles outside of work, and I took it out in the workplace. But, at the end of the day, I just want you to know I'm back and I hope I could resolve these things."
Back to the initial thing about reading the tea leaves at work, you have to notice how you're being seen. You have to notice what's going on around you. All you can really do is your best. And once you start to notice that these things are going on around you, you have to be out there networking to try and find alternative situations where you're appreciated.
Again, someone I coached recently works for a small firm in the city I live in, and he's been frustrated at work. He's tried working hard, it hasn't really worked and you start to reach out to people who've already left this firm and got to someone who has already found a position, introduced him for a role and he starts in a week.
Remember, statistically, your network is always going to be the place where you're going to get the results. It may not be directly from them, and that they may not be the ones who hire you, but they may introduce you to someone who will be the one who hires you. So I just want to remind you to pay attention to the signals around and, yes, you want to be putting in great work but don't ignore what's going on and ensure . . .
The classic example is the person who eats at their desk. They never go out to lunch. They never talk to people in other departments. They never talk to people outside the organization. As a result, when they're suddenly let go in situations like I outlined, they're completely unprepared. There's no resume. No up to date LinkedIn profile. No network in place to help.
You don't want to be caught short like this. You've got to pay attention to all the tea leaves at work and all the signals that are going in and take action to protect your interest. After all, you're the Chairman of the Board of your organization. You have shareholders--Your wife, husband, partner. Kids whomever, you are a corporate entity in and of yourself and you have to protect your show shareholders.

Most people I run into abdicate responsibility for their careers to others. They let employers make decisions about it. They give away their power to the business that is paying the check and wonder why, at the end of the day, they are discarded.

When all is said and done, YOU have to take charge of your career. YOU are responsible for the outcomes that occur and YOU have to make decisions that affected. No one else.

If you abdicate responsibility, you get what you deserve. YOU are supposed to be in charge.

Summary

I want to talk with you about the criteria that fewer individuals are using when they evaluate job offers.

It's important to consider the money. It's important to consider the benefits. I want to point this one out because it was a mistake I made early in my career; I just want to make sure that you avoid it in yours. That is, look at retirement planning.

You may be 22. at this point and retirement may be 100 years from now. But, the fact of the matter remains, it can be free money that, when compounded over the course of your career, can be money that you can use and will need. And, trust me when I say this, I wish I had done it differently myself.

With that being the case, there's another thing that people need to evaluate when you evaluate offers-- career pathing. When a firm talks with you about a job offer, you have interviewed about the job they have available today and you need to also ask, "2 or 3 years from now, where am I going to be? What kind of options might exist for me. If I do a great job? What is this firm normally do to rotate people in the organization?"

This is important because, think about it for a second, if you were to do the same job for the next 5 years of your life, 15 years of your life, 40 years of your life, I think you might want to put a bullet in your head. I know from my experience as a recruiter, you kind of do the same thing over and over again. One of the reasons I do this podcasts is to keep myself fresh because, all day long, I am staring at resumes, I'm talking with people, I am doing business development to open up new accounts, I am responding to customer inquiries,, negotiating salaries and people… All the same tasks.

What I set out to do is to create a little bit of freshness. So I started to write books, do videos, do podcasts, do a whole host of things to make my work more interesting to me Because the job of recruiter is extremely repetitive.

Do you want to be in a position where you are doing the same job for 40 years? No change whatsoever? I don't think so.

So, asked him about career pathing. Asked him about where you can go a few years from now. No guarantees, obviously. But what is the pattern of rotating people into newer opportunities.

I Am 29 With a Useless Degree. How Can I Have the Career I Want ?| JobSearchTV.com

This is a common and sad story for so many. How do you approach finding a career?

Summary

I shortened the title for this video because I just didn’t have the space. The question is, “I’m 29, have a useless degree, in debt, want to change careers and am completely lost. How can I managed to pursue a new and great life?”

This is a painful question. I'm not being sarcastic. There is an entire generation that feels this way. And they are right. Many of them have been sold useless degrees, wound up in debt and need to figure it out and don't know how to because the system is just treated them like sausage and put them to the meatgrinder to sell them degrees and not really outcomes. Horrible. Absolutely horrible.

To you older workers, I just want to say, shut up!” You weren’t any different at this age.

For those of you wanted to have careers and did have careers, God bless you. I know you took a linear path. You started off with that. But, I have to tell you, a lot of you in the same boat at this age, not sure what to do and couldn't figure it out and now that you are established, you’ve forgotten what it's like to be young and unsure and having been put through a system that doesn't try to help you get any more sure.

So, for you who are in this position, don't listen to the “ass wipes” because they are useless to you. However, what you can do is (#1) be patient with yourself. You don't have the answer and you're not going to have it tomorrow but you have to start beginning your process where you begin figuring it out. I know you think you been doing this up until this point by taking different jobs and that's can be part of the process for maybe another year or 2. Part of the process is also going to be being patient with yourself, easing up on yourself and just trying different things.

And in trying different things, I want you to not just take them at random. I would like you to start talking to different people who are already a little further along than you about how they got their jobs and what it’s like to work in that field.

So, I just started a series a little while ago about careers where I am interviewing people. I don't have a lot there yet but I will fairly soon. I talk with people who work in different professions about what it's like to work in that field. There will be more but consider taking a look for the careers playlist on my YouTube channel which could find JobSearchTV.com.

Try different things. Talk to different people about what it's like to work in different fields. Don't just listen to them complain because complaining is useless to you. Listen between the lines about what they do, what a typical day is like, what the problems are, what they like and don’t like, and what the future is like.

You can't get stuck in other people's complaining and you have to learn to read between the lines to the stuff that really matters to you period you can be doing a great profession in a crappy firm and feel like crap and then, you stop and say, “ what and I taking away from this. I'm learning something that's very marketable peer a” but the idea is to talk to different people, bounce around a bit, (because, frankly, it’s normal as you figure things out and get experience in that profession.

Always talk to people period connect with people who our doing the kind of work. You can do through LinkedIn, Facebook, a whole host of different places and try to arrange quick conversations with them by phone, by email, on facetime, on Skype. . . Whatever way it is, just find a way to talk to people about what it's like to work in a particular profession.

Make sure you maintain the contact information for them so that, in this way, you can get back in touch with them in the future and say, “I really appreciated the time that you took to help me. This is where I am right now. Your advice gave me a lot of hope, potential and guidance. Thank you.”

These people can become mentors to you in the future if you take the time to reconnect with them from time to time. You don’t want to be doing this every week, but if you land in a profession, or if you choose to exclude it, where you can tell them, “I really appreciate the fact that you took time with me period based upon what I heard, I learned enough to know that this really wasn't right for me. Now, I’m doing such and such and your advice was really helpful by helping me to decide not to make a mistake and go into the same field.

See where I am going? It's all about building a relationship and it's also about trial and error.

I hate stagnating in my job, but can’t find a better one. Should I take a career break? I grew rapidly in my company but got stuck in middle management (“Head of…”), mainly due to hard politics. The worst thing is that other companies don’t seem to hire at my level.
I made huge sacrifices to get here and burnt out, so I would only be satisfied with higher pay and/or level of responsibility.

Summary

I received a good question from someone that I thought was worthwhile to choose for a variety of reasons.

Let me just read it to you.

I want to expand the question a little bit to address less experienced workers and then come back to deal with this specific scenario.

For the younger workers finding it difficult to find something, maybe you don't like your job and are not getting job offers, often the issue is that your interview skills need to improve. Thus, I encourage people to learn and practice and become better a job hunting. After all, the skills needed to find a job are different than those needed to do a job.

However, this is a scenario where we are dealing with a middle management professional who feels stuck. There are two ways of addressing this.

The first is to get "unstuck." Start defeating the politics and learn where you been typecast in the wrong way and adapt. You to find your problem is being with your current firm and you are stagnating because people see you in one way and value something else.

Thus, the idea is to find what they value and start playing to it. This doesn't mean you have to change jobs but it also doesn't mean that you have to quit, go home and watch TV all the time.

That should probably be your first choice.

The second may be similar to the advice that I gave to the young professional but I'm going to emphasize something a little bit different.

For the inexperienced one, I spoke about getting better at job hunting. For you, I want to encourage you to get better at networking, Often, for people who are stuck in middle management, they worked so hard for so long, keeping their heads down to do a great job that networks outside their current firm are next to nonexistent.

You need to build the network seeking question and build the validity of the statement that you made that "other companies don't seem to hire at your level."

Often they don't have an opening right now but (1) they may create one for the right person, and (2) the opening may come later on as corporate "musical chairs" starts to occur and people move from one vacancy to another.

What I'm getting at is that you are obviously frustrated with your current job but also frustrated with job hunting so you're looking for permission to give up.

I don't buy that. For the person who's worked hard their entire career and for the first time have run into a career obstacle, quitting should not be your choice. Taking a break should not be your choice.

Finding the path to the right situation should be your choice and practicing patience should become part of your repertoire, rather than giving up.
