Stupid branding mistakes, and this one. . . As a person who's starting out in branding, in personal branding, the idea is to develop a reputation. But so often people wait until, as the old saying goes, they dig the well when they're thirsty, as opposed to digging the well when they're not thirsty.

I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a career and leadership coach. And I've got a great website at with thousands of posts in the blog that you can watch listen to or read. I also have a great YouTube channel at And, in addition, . . . by the way, subscribe to the channel there. And the number one podcast in Apple podcasts for job search. As of this recording more than 2200 episodes over more than 10 years.

And I want to tell you very simply, you can't wait until you need things from people. Like fruit, like food, you have to prepare in advance for winter. And thus, people make the mistake of not connecting with people with larger substance or larger numbers of network connections than they do. Which is pretty easy to discern on platforms like LinkedIn, of course or Twitter. But you go as an island and you push out content, and no one sees it.

And the way, the the world works , if you have a website that no one visits, what impact do you have? Who gets to know about you? Even Google is unimpressed at the beginning, because part of the way they evaluate is based upon the number of links or backlinks that come into your articles, that come into your content.

Writing on places like LinkedIn, for example, doing articles or showing content there is good. But if you have 25 connections, you're not really being seen by a lot of people. So make the investment of reaching out and connecting with people and start to develop a rep. Ideally, one to one with those, but you can do one to many and share information with people. But connect with influencers, share, put yourself out there and you'll start getting results. And again, don't wait until you're thirsty to dig that well. Be proactive. It's not I write one article and I'm complete. Or I connect with one person with 25 connection, 25000 connections, and I'm complete. This has to be part of your career.

Just like your company does things to sell business. You're the business and you have to sell yourself.

Hope you found this helpful. Again, visit You can schedule time for a free discovery call or schedule time for coaching. I also have courses to help with job search. I'd love to help you.
