I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I
coach people and organizations to be
more effective and for individuals that
can involve job search and leadership
that can be within their current
organization or the next firm I’ll help
people make the transition from one
organization to another and be effective
in the new firm or in the current firm I
would like to help people in their
careers and I thought I would do a video
today to kind of coalesce a lot of my
thinking into one place and one topic
and that’s the notion of sales and when
you deal with a sales person they can
sell two different things to you number
one is they sell the features and
benefits now I’ll talk with in terms of
cars here for a second when you buy a
car
what’s the feature and benefit to a car
the feature azar we’ve got these great
wheels look at this gorgeous car it’s
got you know a wonderful interior look
at these seats now and we’ve got GPS
built in we’ve got Spotify these are all
features to benefits
this car has well high reliability this
is a stylish vehicle these are all
examples of the types of benefits you’ll
look great behind the wheel of this car
this has been the classic sales
technique for cars now when you think of
Jonathan most of the time people sell
features I know this I know that what
are the benefits of you that they don’t
really do all that well they talk about
what they know and you talk about what
you’ve done but you don’t really talk
about the solution that you offer what’s
the solution you’ve provided that
previous employers what’s the solution
that you can provide this employer now
when I coach people I’ll talk with them
about asking an opening question that
goes hey thanks so much I’m making time
to speak with me yeah I recall the
position of disruption Bharatha gate
you wanna take on the world please tell
me about the job as you see it and what
I could do to help it’s a great opening
question because what it does is it has
them talk about what they’re looking for
and what the job is really all about
right so when you are talking with them
yes you should talk about you know the
features that you have but you can also
talk about benefits you know you know
you’ve had people in this organization
who more or less skilled than I am what
I am as a a low maintenance individual
who takes the elections very well asks
great questions will come to you for
advice from time to time but generally
can one were things that you give me to
do in the past what I’ve done for this
organization
is you know I took a situation that was
you know in a lot of pain it was way
behind and you talk about problems that
you stepped into and how you made it
easy for that organization same thing in
this one you know you can talk about how
you will take what they have taught at
world class or make it very effective or
some benefit that you can provide that
but generally you’re gonna talk about
the solution that you can offer for them
based upon your skills and experiences
and those are the features but then you
have to go into the solutions sail at
the back end and we translate these
features into a benefit for the employer
remember there are a lot of people who
know pretty much what you do what makes
you different what can you do for them
that will differentiate you and this is
not just simply a question for
leadership this is a question for staff
individuals talking to a hiring manager
who’s apprehensive about choosing one
person or another remember they’ve got a
situation that needs to be addressed
they want to be able to look across the
table at you and trust you and trust
that you can help them solve their
organization’s problems that’s what I
mean by solution
sales so I hope you found this helpful
