Recovering from a Layoff | JobSearchTV.com

You’ve received the shocking notification that you were laid off. Here’s how to begin to recover.

When You’ve Been Made Redundant, Fired, Laid Off, RIF’d

Layoffs are the ultimate professional shock. Like divorce and breakups and personal relationships, they disrupt, destroy or harm you emotionally. Before you allow yourself to go into the emotional funk, I’d like you to spend a little bit of time jotting down your successes, every last one of them at the last job.

What did you do well? What did you accomplish? How did you accomplish it? What could you have done better, but the focus has to be on the positive. After you’ve done this, allow yourself to slip into the emotional side. But every day that you’re on the emotional descent, the sadness, the depression, the upset, every day you’re feeling that way, you have to spend at least a half-hour writing about your professional successes. Go organization by organization.

If you’re down for four days, before you can start to move forward, each of those days, take that minimum half hour to write about your successes. The reason I’m emphasizing this is because, frankly, as you start to get out and about and writing and updating your resume, or interviewing, these successes are going to be the foundations of all your stories.

As you know, when you interview, who’s going to be there to toot your own horn? But I want to help you shift your mental focus by focusing on your successes in preparation for resume writing, LinkedIn profile, updating, and interviewing. It will make a huge difference to you, both in your recovery and in your preparation for going to market.
