Recession Proofing Your Career: Audit Your Skills

This is another thing to do to recession-proof your career.

The Best Way to Recession-Proof Your Career

Today, we begin talking about recession-proofing your career. This is something you need to do all the time, not just simply when the headlines are getting scary, not just simply when your friends are fearful. This is a specific thing to do regularly, every six months, every year, preferably six months, but certainly no later than one year, and that’s the idea of auditing your skills.

Are your skills marketable? Are they desirable? What do you need to improve upon your skills to make them more desirable and more marketable? More than ever, fewer firms are doing skills development work. Thus, this is something you need to do for yourself. Now there are plenty of free or very low-cost places where you can upgrade your skills, Skillshare is one. LinkedIn premium services offers LinkedIn education services. These are all course sites that allow you to improve your capabilities so that this way you’re more marketable.

Look for others. All you need to do is a Google search, free education, and identify places that offer the kind of supplemental training that you need in order to stay marketable. Then, at your current firm, look for ways that you can develop experiences using this training. If your firm doesn’t offer that capability, keep working and being capable in what you’ve learned, because the next organization will probably need it.
