Options For Laid Off Immigrants on a Visa

Someone shared a post from the website, readunshackled.com That is the name of the site–Readunshackled.com. That’s a site geared toward immigrants working in the United States. And it talks about what to do if you’ve been laid off and now you have 60 days before you have to leave the United States. I’m Jeff Alt, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search advice and coaching globally, because I make the process so much easier for people.
And what the post did was provided an in-depth compilation of resources for navigating immigration and getting a job. So the context that they provide is that in the last six months, and that’s what the post says, 210,000 plus employees had been laid off, most of them in the tech sector (I think the amount is more than that. But that’s not important). At least 10% are immigrants on visas, who only have 60 days to figure something out before needing to leave the country. So they put together resources for them, for you to help you navigate this system.
So here are four options for you to stay back in the country. Number one is ask your employer to keep you on payroll in “unproductive employee status” for an extra month or two. Friends of theirs have done this. Number 2, move to a B2 (that’s B as in boy) two visitor visa temporarily until you find a new job. Do this 15 days before your grace period and expect to pay $2,000 for this process. The good news is you can interview for jobs on a B2 visa now.

Number three is move to an H4 visa if you’re married to an h1b visa holder with approved i 140. You can get an EAD and start working on it. Number four, consider applying for the O1 visa and I have a link to the information that they provide for the O1 visa.
Now there are job boards that are specifically for immigrants. And they share Chicagoh1Bconnect, h1brecruitmentconnect, GoZeno that’s GoZeno, myvisajobs, AITouTechnology (that’s AITouTechnology) and

For students, for an international students, you only have 90 days of unemployment before you need to leave the country. So two ideas for you include checking out self-employment OPT, because you can be self-employed on your OPT. And this becomes an option to go the entrepreneurial route. Volunteer on your OPT. And they comment that the great thing about the OPT visa is how flexible it is.
It’s possible to volunteer at a nonprofit on your OPT if the job is related to your degree, and you work more than 20 hours a week. This does not apply to STEM OPT they point out.
