How Do You Prevent Ghosting and Counteroffers?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
LinkedIn’s AI set up the scenario by writing, “Ghosting and counteroffers are two common challenges that recruiters face in today’s competitive talent market.
Ghosting is when a candidate stops responding to your communication, while counteroffers are when a candidate accepts a competing offer or stays with their current employer after receiving a better deal. Both scenarios can waste your time, damage your reputation, and hurt your hiring goals. How can you prevent them from happening or deal with them effectively?
Here are some tips to help you.
Build rapport and trust
One of the best ways to prevent ghosting and counteroffers is to build rapport and trust with your candidates from the start. Show genuine interest in their career goals, motivations, and expectations. Listen to their concerns and address them promptly. Communicate clearly and frequently throughout the hiring process, and keep them updated on the next steps and timelines. By building rapport and trust, you can make your candidates feel valued, respected, and engaged, and reduce the chances of them dropping out or accepting another offer.
I offered an opinion (I am limited to 750 characters) “The work is building a relationship of trust–If you are not trusted, they will respond to someone they trust more than you. Speak with the knowledge you know what you’re talking about. Speak confidently from experience. Connect with someone as a person. Care about them. There are no guarantees that you will connect with someone and they will follow through on a decision to join a new firm. If a job is not better than the one someone is leaving, if a firm’s behavior has not demonstrated they care about the people who work for them or if there was a tough negotiation, they will stay & should. However, assuming normalcy, the most important thing you can do is show you care, connect, create chemistry with them and the team, they’ll join.
