How Can You Avoid Common Career Negotiation Mistakes?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
LinkedIn’s AI posed this scenario: “Negotiating your career can be challenging and stressful, but also rewarding and satisfying. Whether you are asking for a raise, a promotion, a flexible schedule, or a new project, you need to prepare and communicate effectively to achieve your goals. However, many people make common mistakes that can undermine their negotiation outcomes and damage their relationships. Here are some tips on how to avoid them and negotiate with confidence and success.
Know your value
One of the most important steps in any negotiation is to research and assess your value in the market and in your organization. You need to know what skills, experience, achievements, and contributions you bring to the table, and how they align with the needs and expectations of your employer or client. You also need to benchmark your compensation and benefits against comparable roles and industries, and adjust for factors such as location, demand, and performance. Knowing your value will help you set realistic and fair expectations, and justify your requests with evidence and data.
I responded by saying, “The first step in the process is NOT knowing your value. It is knowing where you want to get to professionally and understanding the price you will need to get there. For example, if you are a developer who wants to make it to the C suite of a certain-sized organization, what will you need to know and do in order to achieve that and what sacrifices will you have to make to achieve that? If you are unwilling to pay the price, how can you recalibrate your goals to something that is achievable and how does this new role fit with it whether it is internally or externally?”
