If You Want Real Answers, Look for the Level 6 Expert

In season 3, episode 1 of his podcast, “Against the Rules,”; he tells two stories many of you need to hear about finding the Level 6. What’s the Level 6? They are the real experts.

If you don’t know that, Michael Lewis, you’re not paying attention to US culture. Lewis has written The Big Short, Liars Poker, Moneyball The Blind Side, a number of great books that talk about cultural phenomena that have been an impact on the society.

And he has a podcast called Against the Rules. And in season three, the first episode, he tells the story of Athena Healthcare, and how they went about solving 
a problem in the healthcare system, where doctors basically had to hire a medical biller per doctor to bill and collect on invoices to insurance companies. And there were lots of issues with that. There was a lot of money out on the street. Doctors were finding it difficult to collect. Each insurance company had rules, and sub-rules and sub- rules on top of those depending upon the specific policies that were written.
And the long the short of it is they hired someone who was a medical billing expert, who helped them program their systems, because she had that obsessive quality to understand what the problems were, how to go about solving them, and all the different permutations of addressing different insurance companies in all their minutia.
Let’s fast forward. He tells another story in the episode about the healthcare.gov website launch, which was a disaster and a consultant who was brought in to solve the problem, who looked for what was referred to as the level six. The level six refers to the person six levels down from leadership who knows what the real problems are, but no one talks to them because there’s so many strata between them and the leadership, real answers get filtered out. And how important it is to connect with the level six person because they really know.
So often, people are isolated from the people who really know their filters. They’re called managers, directors, VPs SVPs, managing directors, between senior leadership and the people who really know. And I don’t care if you’re within that stratified area of all those additional titles. You could be going down to the level six to get real answers instead of getting the sanitized the ones that you’re getting now. It’s a great podcast. It’s called Against the Rules.
