today, I want to talk with you about another technique to find more work and find more clients and it’s one that I learned many many years ago from a friend of
mine who work at that time for the old Merrill Lynch. Now the technique is really very simple and as the story goes, it was originally offered at a meeting of the Charles E Merrill Club of the top producers of the old Merrill Lynch and the speaker got out on stage and he’s got the top salespeople the organization sitting in front of him at a conference center in Hawaii where they’ve been flown out of Merrill’s expense with their wives to be entertained. And they are in the seminar when a great piece of advice from the speaker comes out. P looks at someone in the front row, it looks around the audience.
He says, “how would you like to increase your book of business by seven to ten percent and it’s just going to take five seconds or less for every phone call. People thought, “Okay, let’s try to do the mental calculations as to what the value of this is five to seven seconds to me. It’s actually three because I speak quickly but here’s the technique that he offered.
he to someone in the front row. He says, ” time me on this.” He pauses. “nice watch. Rolex, right?” So, the guy looks at his watch and gets ready to start timing him. “are you ready? On your mark, get set, go! Is there anyone else you know who I could be helping?”
Obviously, this is a sales technique that works when you’re talking to a customer. It’s not an advertising technique. It’s one where you’ve already had a successful relationship with someone, where you’ve created a positive impression, ask if there’s someone else that they know who you could be helping because, after all, it’s not like people think about offering you as a referral. It’s not like individuals are constantly referring their doctors or their lawyer but, if they’re reminded by asking for a referral, suddenly names come to mind! If it doesn’t happen with the first one, if it does happen on the fifth one , i it doesn’t happen on the tenth one, you’ve asked 10 people.
