One thing I know about your best people is they hate being surrounded by people who don’t give a damn as much as they do. You know, the ones who spend all day talking about where they’re going to have lunch, the ones who spend all day creating friction that slows this person down, the ones who don’t care about their work.
Your best people do care and when you surround them with losers, disengaged people, and others who don’t care as much as they do (which may include you, by the way), you wind up losing them because they become frustrated.
Eliminate the drag, learn to hire better, and learn to be more effective in how you manage and coach your people so that you don’t wind up losing your best people.
