One of the ways that recruiters can steal your best people is hiring managers don’t have conversations with them at times when they’re doing good work. They’re only talking with them at times when they’re worried, or there’s a problem, when they want to criticize. If you haven’t heard of stay interviews, it’s the concept of talking to people about why it is they stay, what is it they like about the environment. If they could change any one thing about working there, what would they change. Opening up that kind of a conversation openly and honestly with people so that you can hear feedback proactively, enforce the things that they like, and try and reduce the situations that they don’t.
