I had an interview a few days ago and it went okay. I sent my thank you emails the same day and got a reply from the hiring manager that they will let me know once they make a decision…I was thinking of waiting for 2 weeks before emailing them back showing them I’m still interested, or should I just wait for them to reach back to me?
Here's the question for today. I had an interview a few days ago and it
went okay. I sent my thank you emails the same day
and got a reply from the hiring manager that they will let me know once they
make a decision. I was thinking of waiting for two weeks
before emailing them back, showing them I'm still interested or
should i wait for them to reach back to me?
I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a coach who helps people professionally
in a number of different ways and here, you know, you made a mistake in your
interview. And that is one of the last things you
should have asked them is "could you give me a timeline for next
steps? When might I expect to hear back from you
once you've made a decision for a next round?"
You see, what they've done is give you the "don't call us.
we'll call you" answer which isn't really useful.
When i did recruiting, the answer for me was always no more than a week
just to follow up and that's how you would follow up
for the interview for doing the follow-up. You would say
"i apologize but I forgot to ask when you expected
that I might hear back about the next steps or whether
I was rejected," and then this way you know, they can't string it along
forever. They're giving you a sense of when it might be
which is all you really care about. If they've made a favorable decision,
obviously, they'll get back. If they haven't, you don't know because
it's drifted off into the abyss. i always encourage people ask
that question-- When might I expect to hear from
you about next steps," if there are going to be next steps,
so that this way I can manage my own expectations. If they say
"not really sure. I've got another 24 people to talk with,"
that tells you something, right? Don't hold on to that opportunity.
As always, you should be looking for more things and not just
hanging on praying that this is the one for you.
You made a mistake. This is how to correct it going forward. Make that
change.. I'm Jeff Altman. Hope you found this
