How Do You Negotiate Salary When Offered Too Little?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
The poster wrote, “When you receive a lowball offer, don’t react with anger, disappointment, or rejection. Instead, express your enthusiasm and appreciation for the opportunity, and emphasize your fit and value for the company. This will signal that you are not just looking for money, but also for a mutually beneficial partnership. It will also keep the door open for further discussion and negotiation.”
The Warning Sign of a Problem or That They Aren’t Sure
I replied, “In my experience, the way you respond is with a few moments of silence. Then say, “Huh!” Speak the next sentence softly as though you are in pain. “I’d like to think about it for a day or two.” They know it’s the money and you are putting pressure on them without arguing or begging. Let the silence do the work. After all, HR has to report to the hiring manager who decided to choose you that you didn’t immediately accept. When you get back to them, clear up all your questions about everything other than money and then say, “As you can tell, I am really interested in joining. Can you do a touch better?” This makes them negotiate against themselves and keeps you out of demanding or begging. It works.”
