The 1 Question Every C-Level Candidate Should Be Asked

Securing a board seat requires patience and persistence. You’ll need to keep enhancing your skills, expand your network, and stay up to date with industry trends to increase your chances of being invited onto a board of directors. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search advice and coaching globally, because I make things so much easier for people.

C level interview | Jeff Altman, The Big Game HunterAnd I want to be clear, we’re not talking about you being invited onto a Google board, or a Facebook board or Apple, or any major American corporation. We’re talking about you getting onto a board of directors locally. And here’s a couple of things you’ll need to do.

The first thing is of course, leverage your network. Start by reaching out to your existing professional network, including mentors and colleagues and industry leaders, letting them know about your interest in joining the board, and asking if they have any insights or connections that can help you in your search.

Networking events, conferences, and industry associations are also great places to meet individuals who may be connected to board positions. Remember, part of what you’re doing is expanding your network and developing relationships with people who could be influential on the selection.

Second is involves engaging with executive search firms that fill such roles. These search firms often assist companies to identify potential board members. Reaching out to reputable firms in your industry, and submitting your resume highlighting your relevant expertise. We’re not talking about you being a business analyst, of course. But we’re talking about you highlighting your expertise as would be fit a board, your accomplishments, and your interest in board roles. Establishing relationships with these firms will help open doors to different opportunities.

Third is attend board-focused events.

Many organizations host events centered around board governance and leadership. Thus, attending will provide you with insights into board recruitment processes, and allow you to connect with individuals already serving on boards or those seeking new members.

Expand your network. Join relevant organizations is going to be my fourth point. Consider joining professional associations or industry associations related to the sector you’re interested in serving on a board for. These platforms offer networking opportunities, educational resources, and access to individuals who may be aware of board openings.

Remember, and I’ll repeat what I said at the beginning. Securing a board position requires patience, time, and persistence. Keep enhancing your skills, expanding your network, and staying up to date with industry trends to increase your chances of being invited onto a board of directors.
