Having a Portfolio Career Whether You Need It or Not

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

If you haven’t heard the term portfolio career, I explained it and why it is important to have one, even if you’re happy in your current position.

Having a portfolio career whether you need it or not? What the heck is a portfolio career? Let me just explain to you the concept.

Let’s say you’re working full time, and you’re interested in a different field. So it becomes a way that you can experiment by doing something on the side that allows you to develop an expertise or have experiences that test out your hypothesis. Another way of looking at it is multiple concurrent gigs. So the classic example is, I do websites, SEO, Google AdSense, and whatever else. There are lots of slashes between yourChanging careers | Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter capabilities. And thus, that’s the portfolio you build.

If you’re working full time, but you’re not exactly sure you like the kind of work that you do, it becomes a way that you can experiment in an area that you’re curious about, without necessarily making a full commitment. Like there was someone I spoke to yesterday, who heads up sales for an organization. And there are two or three things he’s considered doing next. And I suggested experimenting, trying to pick up work along those lines, on top of what he was already doing, so that he could try it out and see what clicked for him. If nothing clicked, it was an investment in time and he made some money. But if it did click, it became a place where he could invest his time and effort, because he was thinking of leaving the kind of work he was doing for you.

Whether you’re full-time or you’re doing gigs, building a portfolio career is smart, particularly during times that might become recessionary because it gives you fallback positions for income that can serve you during the down times.
