Getting Your References Ready

Getting Your References Ready | JobSearchTV.com

You don’t want to wait until you’re about to get an offer to prepare your references. You want to actually determine who your references will be and prepare them for answering questions early in your search. These are a few questions to prepare them for.

This is the reference check form I mentioned

When You’ve Been Made Redundant, Fired, Laid Off, RIF’d

You don’t want to wait until you’re about to get an offer to have your references prepared. You want to get their okay to be a reference, and you want to give them advice about what to say about you. I have a framework for questions I’m going to walk through here, just as a way of giving you a sense. And I’ll also say, I’m going to have a download for this available on my website. But in the meantime, I’ll just simply say, this is very, very easy.

So the first thing you want to do is confirm their email address, office number, home or mobile number, because the firm is going to reach out to them, right, and you want to make sure you give the right information.

The relationship to you.

How long they’ve known you.

A description of your responsibilities at work, so that in this way, they’re not thinking of it on the fly. They’re able to have this prepared in advance in their minds.

If you’re a technologist, your primary technical skills. If you’re in other fields, what are your primary professional skills that you use.

Describe any outstanding strengths.

Describe any developmental needs that you may have? Talk with them about this. So they couch things in ways that don’t interfere with the job that you’re trying to get.  After all, if they say that you’re not detail-oriented, and that’s required of the position, that’s going to disqualify you.

Best Leadership articles featured on Tealfeed in 2021

Describe your ability to work with others.

Your leadership abilities, if applicable to this role.

Your ability to work under pressure.

On a one to five scale, with one being the lowest and five being the highest ranking, for self motivation, work ethic, personality, writing skills, oral presentation skills, reliability, flexibility, ability to work on a team, ability to work independently.

In their opinion, what management style works best for you. No one wants to be seen as a micromanager. And you don’t want to be described as someone who needs to be sat on in the course of doing your work. If they give you a directive, just have you check in with him from time to time; you’re going to do the job.

Would you rehire this person or work with them again?

How is their relationship? How is your relationship with your supervisors, peers, and. if appropriate, with clients?

And what advice would you give to a new employer about this candidate? That’s an easy question. Just make sure they don’t say something dumb and just simply say “You’re getting a terrific person.” Words to that effect.
