During an Interview, How Can You Tell an Applicant is Bullsh*tting? | JobSearchTV com
This is one of my all-time favorite questions! And the answer is so simple!
Someone sent this question to me. It just brought a big smile to my face.
How can you tell a candidate is bullsh*tting during an interview? When I trained
people in recruiting, when I was doing recruiting, this was one of the things I
started off every training with. Now, I said “lie.” How can you tell a candidate
is lying to you?
The answer is their lips are moving! How can you tell an employer is lying to you?
Their lips are moving!
And, of course, how could you tell a third-party recruiter is lying to you?
Yes, you guessed it. Their lips are moving.
Why do I say this? Because everyone is posturing for advantage. The candidate, the company, the recruiter.
Sometimes the recruiter is the messenger of the lies but that’s a digression. Everyone is posturing for advantage
So when you ask about how can you tell an applicant is lying, there should be no trust whatsoever because they are
trying to position themselves with the best face possible and if you’re a hiring manager, you need to remember the
statistics are that over 60% of managers within 18 months of hiring someone have buyer’s remorse.
Why is that?
Answer. Because there’s something that each of you has misrepresented to one another where there is now a disconnect.
The new hire is not really into the game. They’re not engaged.. And, you, as a hiring manager, have misled them.
It’s just a reality to it. After all, did you tell them about the last three people and how they failed who were sitting at that same desk that this person is? Of course, you didn’t. You put on a great representation of the job and the opportunity and the team of people and now they’ve learned the truth and feel disappointed.
Conversely, they’ve misrepresented themselves. Everyone does it. So when someone asks the question, “how can you tell someone is
bullsh*tting you,” everyone does!.
