Crafting Your LinkedIn Mission Statement

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

EP 3116 There is a LinkedIn opportunity most people miss.

All right, let’s talk about one of the most powerful and honestly most overlooked pieces of real estate you have online. I’m talking about your LinkedIn profile. Today, we’re going to flip the script and turn it from just a history lesson into a powerful vision for your future.

So let me just ask you this straight up. When you look at your LinkedIn profile right now, is it just a resume, you know, a list of all the things you’ve done? Or is it a vision, a roadmap for where you’re going next? Because believe me, that one little shift in perspective changes everything. And you know where this vision is supposed to live? It’s right there in that about section.

Seriously, this is the biggest missed opportunity on 99% of profiles out there. So many people treat it like this dusty old summary of past job duties. And that just completely fails to capture who you are and the value you bring to the table.

I mean, just look at the difference here. The old way is all about looking in the rearview mirror, right? It’s a passive list of stuff you did. But the new way, it’s a mission statement that looks forward.

It’s active. It’s you planting a flag and declaring, this is the value I create. And here’s where I’m going.

It’s not a history report. It’s a statement of intent. And this really gets to the heart of it.

Once you reach a certain point in your career, the whole conversation has to change. People aren’t just hiring you for what you’ve already done. They’re investing in the impact you’re going to make.

The focus has to pivot from your past accomplishments to your future contributions. Think about it like this. Skills are your foundation.

You absolutely need them. They get you in the game. But they aren’t what makes you stand out anymore.

Interviewing is a Performance: Are You Failing the Script?

Your real differentiator, it’s your wisdom. It’s your strategic insight, your gut feeling for how things really work. And that about section, that is the perfect place to show off that wisdom, not just list your skills.

Okay, so we get the why now, right? It’s about looking forward. So let’s get to the good stuff, the how. I’m going to walk you through a super simple formula you can use like today to rewrite your about section and turn it into that forward-looking story we’ve been talking about.

So here it is, a simple three-step formula. First, you define the need. What’s a big, juicy problem in your industry that you are genuinely passionate about solving? Start there.

Second, you position your value. This is where you connect the dots and show exactly how your unique background makes you the perfect person to tackle that problem. And third, you state your mission.

You just come right out and declare your vision, your commitment. You show them you’re all in. And when you do this, oh man, this is where the magic really happens.

You completely change the game. You stop being just one more person applying for a job, and you become an in-demand expert that attracts the right kind of opportunities, the kind that actually line up with your mission. And the benefits are just huge.

I mean, you’re not just listing tasks anymore. You’re putting your strategic mind on display. This mission-driven approach works like a magnet.

It connects you with leaders and companies that are on your wavelength. You start attracting opportunities that feel like they were made for you. And maybe most importantly, it just completely elevates the conversation way beyond what’s on your resume.

So I’ll just leave you with this one last question. After all this, what story is your profile going to tell tomorrow? Is it going to be one that’s stuck looking in the past or one that’s busy building the future? The choice is all yours. And the really cool part is you can start rewriting that story right now.
