It isn’t all cut and dry or fact-based queries that search firms, the search committee, and the CEO are examining during an interview.

For those of you who are doing executive interviews, for those
of you who are going for C level positions, the importance of the
"chit chat" is real important and tends to be ignored. I have
to admit, I do that. Also, I forget to prep people sometimes
about this part of the interview. I'm Jeff Altman, The
Big Game Hunter. And I'll just simply say, when you're in a
situation where you're interviewing for the C suite,
you're meeting the search firm, you're meeting the board
members, and you're invited into the kitchen for the coffee
conversation ("Would you like some coffee or tea? I'll take
some coffee, I'll have some tea.. Great) and then you're brought
in and there's about a 10 minute period of time while everything
is getting prepped for you, right? Well, the chit chat
allows them to figure out who you are as a person and to see
whether you can demonstrate that you can connect with people. It
is a part of the interview, because they're going to figure
out from that as to whether or not you're going to connect with
their population internally, externally, what you're like is
as a human being.
I'm reminder of this Gary. Burnison, at one point, I don't
know if he still is, as head of. Korn Ferry, talked about doing
this on his interviews. He would bring people into the kitchen,
trying to engage them for about 10 minutes of non-work related
conversation, to see how they connected. Don't ignore this
part of the interview because it is a part of the interview.
They figure out whether or not they like you personally, then
they'll get into the meat and bones of the conversation. But
fundamentally, people neglect this part. And when firms hire,
they want to feel like they know, like and trust the
individual-- and respect them, as well. They make certain
assumptions about your capabilities going in but this
is all reality to your interviews.
I'm Jeff Altman. Hope you found this helpful. My website is Go there and go exploring. There's a lot
