Be Proactive With Your Information in Case You’re Laid Off
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Here are a few things to do proactively in case you’re laid off. After all, once you’re told, they are not going to give you much time to get your data.
Preparing for The Inevitable Layoffs
Hi. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. And people hire me for no BS career advice, which can relate to job search hiring, more effectively, managing and leading better, and a whole host of other things.
I don’t care if your company is in the media yet about proposed layoffs or economic troubles that may be having. The folks in tech, as I’m recording this at the end of 2022, really didn’t have a lot of warning when they suddenly got notifications of being laid off. So I want you to think proactively of what you might do to
protect information and hold on to information that will help you find work.
So, think in those terms. What information do you need, and primarily, I would say, it’s your contacts, the reviews you’ve been given, because those documents are successes and areas of improvement, that will be useful reminders for updating your resume. But most importantly, it’s your contacts.
Now, you can export them as a CSV file and take that with you as a thumb drive. Save it to a Dropbox account of your choice, whatever. But if you’re working at a major firm, it is going to pick up on that and notice. So I keep thinking that one of the best things that people can do is to connect with everyone who’s in their contacts on LinkedIn, so that, in this way, you have access to reaching out to them and the ability to do it without downloading everything and sending a notice to the IT organization that you’re doing that.
Also, should you be laid off, you may not have a lot of time. So you need to think ahead about this. And if you are cut, remember, you have a variety of personal apps on your device, tools that you’ve worked with, and maybe Chrome extensions that you normally keep open. Make sure you have usernames and passwords for those extensions and apps. Like if you’re a LastPass user like I am, one of the things that you can do is make sure you have the username and password make sure you have LastPass installed on your home computer, that you have all your password access, because you’re gonna lose access to them at work, right?
Also close any personal accounts, personal programs, accounts, what have you, in case you have to return your laptop to the organization so that in this way, you have the data, but you’re not losing anything nor giving them a gateway to your personal data that you don’t want them to have.
The big thing again comes down to your contacts and reviews, particularly the contacts. Reach out to people on LinkedIn before you need to do all of the stuff so that they’re already connected and available to you in case you need to reach out to them for help with finding a job.
