5 Things Every Resume Shouldn’t Do

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

1.     Your resume reads like thousands of others by failing to provide context to what you did. There is a difference between saying you did something on time and within budget like so many do and saying that you took over a team of people who were seen as poor performers with little credibility with users andNetworking Etiquette 101 upgraded their performance and image while delivering on time and within budget.

2.     Don’t use resume templates. Often, they are hard for systems to parse and different releases of Word or Acrobat may display them as messy to a reader/recipient. You took the time to write a resume. Mimic the style of the template you like but don’t use it.

3.     Your font and formatting use no white space and look dense and blocky for a reader to skim (They don’t read resumes. They skim them for relevant information). Some resumes are blocky, making it hard to read.

4.     Show your resume to someone and ask them for the first place their eye goes to, then the second or the third. If they point to three things and none are relevant to what your expertise is related to the job, work on the appearance again until it does.

5.     Even if you run your resume through a spelling and grammar checker, it is important to visually check the spelling. Some misspelled words result in the wrong word being in your resume. It’s spelled correctly but it’s the wrong word.
