Recession-Proof Your Career: Become More Visible | JobSearchTV.com

The person who gets ahead isn’t always the smartest or works the hardest (although those are great professional qualities to have). People get ahead by being alert to opportunites. How do you get opportunities to come to you?
One of the ways that you can develop a recession-proof career is by developing a personal brand that transcends your organization. What do I mean by that? You become known as an individual, rather than known as an employee, and your work at your current firm. How does this operate? Real simple.
One of the things you do is pay attention to the tea leaves in your organization and industry and maintain a healthy professional network. You stay connected with people from your past, you write and share on LinkedIn and elsewhere. You speak and allow yourself to be interviewed for podcasts, or live streams to position yourself as an expert, one that recruiters can easily find, one that search firms can easily find because you’re visible and not invisible. This helps you build a brand of recognition that can be recognized for your expertise that transcends your organization, and allows you to be seen and discoverable by recruiters.
After all, if you become the safe individual for them to reach out to, the one who they believe is a public figure (I know I’ve done this) as a public figure and expert at what he or she does. This allows you to stand out– stand out from others who do similar work but aren’t as visible.
