3 Words to Drop from All Conversations | No BS Coaching Advice

This is going to be a fun little video for you to help you and your relationships with others.

Who Gets Your Attention?

This is going to be a fun little video for you to help you and your relationships with others. They can be professional; they can be personal . . . It doesn’t really matter. But it’s about three words to drop from your vocabulary. What are the words?

No.

But.

However.Date | Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Often, we use those words to either overtly reject someone else’s ideas (no), or to completely negate them (however), but let me give you an example.

Someone says something to you, and you go, “Yeah, but . . . “

Basically, what you’re saying is, “I heard it, but you’re wrong.”

You use the word, however, that someone says something to you. “Yeah. However”  However, is a complete negation of everything that’s preceded it.

Paying attention to your use of these three words, it will be embarrassing to you how frequently you use them, personally and professionally. Just as someone one day, could you do me a favor? Just make a little mark for them. Every time I use one of these expressions, one of these words, in a conversation with someone, I think you’ll be shocked. Like, I just was shocked that I used them 12 times in an hour period of time. Wow! That was an attention getter. For me, I basically told people, you’re wrong 12 times.

So, pay attention to this for yourself, laugh at yourself and if you want to change the habit, the easiest way to do it, is to ask someone to take note of it. Every time you make that mistake, depending upon your level of seniority, you can say, level of financial wealth, you can say, every time I use the word, just point it out to me just with a quick finger, and I’ll contribute $5 to a child charity . . .  or 10 or 20 or 100 or 1000 whatever it is. Start paying a charity of your choice every time you use the word.

Don’t debate with people. That is “Yeah, but, you know, it fit in that moment!” No, it doesn’t. No, it doesn’t. Again, what you’re saying is that the person is wrong. Is that really what you want to foster? I don’t think so. I think you what you want to do is foster cooperation and collaboration and using those three words of yes, but and however, all you’re doing is shooting yourself and your relationship in the foot.
