15 Minute Job Search Tips: Check Your Wardrobe
In this video, I offer another suggestion that should take 15 minutes or less that will help your job search.
Now, let me start by saying that you need to do this relatively early on, although you may not necessarily. Let me explain.
Informational Interviews: A Chance to Ask Questions
Most people’s wardrobes has gotten terribly dated. Maybe the fit isn’t right, maybe the style is old. Maybe it just needs a refresher in some way. For men, maybe that’s a sharper tie. For women, I’m not going to presume to make suggestions for you. I’ll just simply say you know what you need to do in order to freshen your look. Sometimes it’s makeup, sometimes it’s wardrobe. For men, make sure you check your shoes here because there’s nothing worse than a physical interview and you’re noticing the dings in someone’s shoes.
I’ll simply say, it shouldn’t take that long to check your wardrobe for how you’re going to dress for a physical interview, or for a video interview. Video interview, he says. Yes, notice, waist up. How do you present on camera? How is what you’re wearing going to be affected by your skin tone if you’re on camera. Physically, if you’re in a face to face interview with someone, what sort of tie are you going to wear if you’re a man? How are you shoes lucky.
Get your stuff to the dry cleaner early, so it doesn’t look creased and rumpled. Make sure there’s a proper fit. If it doesn’t fit, you need to replace it. No excuses. You can’t have the shirt that makes your neck–I’m trying to exaggerate. It’s not my issue– But it kind of makes your neck look huge. There we go over the collar so that everyone knows you squeezed into your shirt. Guys do that. Or this thing with your shirt where you put it on so much weight your belly button is sticking out when you sit down.
Check your wardrobe for fit. Check your wardrobe for appearance and replace it. If you wear the old stuff that’s not appropriate, that’s dated, that doesn’t fit, even if they want to hire you, it can cost you money. So, dare to make a small investment upfront and dress well and not worry about whether or not if people get distracted in the interview will they realize they don’t look so well.
I remember one guy I interviewed years ago. His pants had split before the interview. So he’s got this hole in his crotch. Of all bizarre things. And he’s trying to . . . you think he interviewed well? I’m not suggesting this is your issue. For most people. It’s just as simple as updating a few accessories. For women, hitting the makeup component of it. For men and for women, if you have blemishes, make sure they’re covered up for the interview, whether it’s video or in person. And, you know just make sure everything presents well.
