Young Workers Embrace Job Hopping
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
A LinkedIn summary of a New York Times article said, “Younger workers are getting comfortable with job hopping, as many Gen Z workers prioritize career development over company loyalty, according to The New York Times. More than 22% of workers held positions for a year or less in 2022, as tracked by the Employee Benefit Research Institute, an independent nonprofit. But the practice still isn’t welcome among some recruiters and employers. More than 75% of hiring managers said job hopping was a top concern as they reviewed an applicant’s resume, and the chief executive of one recruitment firm in Chicago says job hopping is a “huge headache” for employers.
Why Are GenZ Employees Failing at Work
I replied, “GenZ are low-paid workers who cannot afford to stay in jobs where they are getting 3% raises (which taxes reduce to 2%) during a period of time when inflation, apartment/housing prices, etc. are stripping them of dignity. A recent coaching client received an offer of $75000 for a great job in LA. He loved the people, the work, the career opportunity,. . . If I take this job, I have to move two hours from my job and live with 3 other people,” he told me. He took another position in a lower-cost area where he could afford an apartment, do similar work and have an easier quality of life.
The year the article focused on was 2022, that wonderful year when inflation reached double digits and raises were at best 5%. Of course they changed jobs AND frequently!
If you hire smart people, don’t expect them to do stupid things.”
