Thinking About A Career Pivot? Doors Are Open In These 5 Fields
This is an executive summary of an article on LinkedIn by George Anders
How Do You Know You Should Change Careers?
Could you enjoy a better career – or get out of a rut – if you switched into an entirely different field? It’s easy to daydream about such possibilities.
A new analysis highlights the industries where U.S. career pivoters are increasingly likely to land, based on LinkedIn profile updates from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023.
As business school professor Herminia Ibarra observes, two main paths can inspire people to make career pivots.
If business conditions are falling apart in your current industry, or if a new field starts looking much more promising, that can be reason enough to switch.
For other career pivoters personal or internal factors are paramount.
They’re more likely to touch on workers‘ sense of purpose, the skills they want to showcase or the types of colleagues they hope to work with.
To see this difference in action, let’s look first at what’s luring career pivoters to oil, gas and mining jobs – versus what’s drawing others to education.
A long-running boom in the domestic U.S. oil and gas sector has left employers scrambling to fill jobs, while pushing up pay.
It’s not uncommon to see job listings offering $80,000 a year or more for roles such as flowback operators.
The opportunity to earn that much is enough to inspire auto-body technicians, restaurant servers and even former retail bankers to leave those old jobs behind.
“Today, Kabbara is chief product officer at Paper, which provides personalized online tutoring and other support for more than 300 school districts across the United States and Canada.”You’re talking about having the impact to
help students be the next generation of entrepreneurs and leaders, no matter where they are now,” Kabbara says.
Switching into edtech involves some big adjustments, Kabbara acknowledges.
In his new role, Kabbara has already led the successful launch of three important new products.
Similar but much milder slowdowns in career pivots have also affected real estate, equipment rental services, retail, professional services, arts and recreation.
Job transitions are calculated by analyzing updates to LinkedIn profiles.
First jobs, student jobs, side jobs and internships are not included.
Coverage is limited to industries with at least 5,000 transitions in the latest period.
