Why Are Job Interviews So Stressful?

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Job interviews are a process where someone you don’t know asks you questions and sits in judgment of you. What could be stressful about that?

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people and organizations helping people become more effective with hiring, with job search, managing and leading, being more effective in the workplace in general. The question I received was why are job interviews so stressful? Oh, stressful! There’s a couple of reasons why.

Number one is, frankly, you don’t know what’s going to happen and if you think about your background and when you are most successful generally there’s a degree of familiarity with what you’re walking into so the result winds up being you’re comfortable you’re not intimidated you’re not frightened so when you’re going to an interview you don’t know what’s going to be asked of you you probably haven’t prepared yourself and by preparation I mean answering questions about the predictable questions you might be asked as well as rehearsing those answers so that you’re comfortable delivering your lines great athletes will practice great entertainers rehearse job hunters go to interviews and usually the first time the words are ever spoken or at the interview and then they wonder why they don’t deliver their lines well does that make a lot of sense to you so the stress is really the fear held within you from not knowing and has nothing to do with the questions. After all, when you get asked questions and you know the answer, you’re pretty good at it, right? So, the more preparation you have, the more you put into the rehearsal, the better that you do and also the better your performance is. The less fear that you feel, the less stress that you have.

Try it. I think you’ll find it works. I’m Jeff Altman.
