When does salary negotiation start? I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a career and leadership coach, I worked in search for what felt like 100 years. And I know Job Hunters miss this point, time and time again because they think they start negotiating salary after they get the offer. In point of fact, employers are negotiating salary at the time of your first interview with the screener, with the recruiter, when they say, "how much are you looking for? Would you be a little flexible." and questions along those lines?

And if you're a part of the country where they're asking you what your current salary is, and that's still a legal question, they're already calculating, based upon their economics, based upon their company practices, what percentage increase they can offer you, etc, etc.

So the mistake that most people have is not hedging their answer. So if you're asked what you're looking for, and it's being done by the screener, you have to start off by adding on to that and saying, "but I really don't know much about the organization, my manager, the people I'd be working with, what the demands of the role are. Yeah, it could be higher, could be a little bit lower. But the fact of the matter is, I need to know a lot more to lock in a price. You guys know what the demands are? I don't yet. So I'd be looking for something in this area. I may up the number, I may lower the number, I need to know more."

So that follow up is critical for those of you who are being pinned in by the recruiter, by this screener, who's trying to get you to tie down on a number at the first meeting, because that's really where they're starting the negotiation.
