What’s The First Thing to Do After You’re Laid Off?

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Assuming you did not anticipate the possibility of a layoff, the first thing to do is sign nothing. Agree to nothing. When they slide a piece of paper in front of you and tell you it is a formality, tell them, “I am not in a mental state where I can read this, understand it and its ramifications. I am going to take this with me and review it with my advisers and will get back to you in a few days.” Most people are in an altered state when they are laid off. You need to regain your composure, even if you don’t think you’ve lost it. They may tell you they can’t issue severance to you until you’ve signed it. “That’s OK. I will be in contact in a few days.” Remember, you may be able to negotiate a better deal than others by delaying.
