Today we’re going to talk about the difference between career growth and career development, a topic that I think is often misunderstood. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS career advice globally. And they do it because I make things easier for them with job searches, hiring, managing and leading, resolving workplace issues, even career transitions.
So what’s the difference? Many people use the two terms, career growth and career development, interchangeably, but they’re actually different. Growth, career growth refers to the upward progression in terms of title, salary responsibilities. It’s about moving up the corporate ladder and achieving higher levels of success within an organization. On the other hand, career development is about expanding your skillset, knowledge, and experiences to enhance your overall career. It’s about investing in yourself or having a firm invest in you to prepare you for future opportunities, regardless of whether they come from your current employer or from a new organization.
For example, suppose you’re working as a marketing coordinator, and your goal is to become a marketing manager. This is an example of career growth. However, if you want to expand your knowledge into digital marketing and take courses to become an expert, that’s career development. Another example could be a software developer who’s working with the same company for several years. If they get a promotion to become a lead developer, this is an example of career growth. However, if they take on additional responsibilities, such as mentoring junior developers, or contributing to an open-source project, this is career development.
To sum up, growth and development, career growth and career development, are two important aspects of building a successful career. Career growth is about moving up and achieving higher levels of success within an organization or elsewhere. For example, career development is about achieving, or I should say expanding your skillset, knowledge and experiences, investing in both to help you achieve your goals and increase your overall satisfaction.
