What Recruiters Know That You Don’t: They Will Check You Out Online
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Here’s something else recruiters know that many of you don’t–they will check you out online.
Using Small Town Networking For Getting Hired In Big Cities
Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS career advice that can involve a job search, hiring more effectively, management, leadership, resolving workplace issues, help with career transitions.
One of the things I think job hunters don’t know that corporate and third-party recruiters know is that they’re going to check you out online. Now, you may think sending a resume is as far as they’re going to go and then they’re going to look at your resume and make decisions.
But I don’t care whether you’re junior or very senior, they’re going to take a look at your online persona– LinkedIn, Google, if they can get to your Facebook profile or Twitter handle, they’re going to do that. Why? Because they’re looking for things that are incongruent with how you present yourself. Let me give you an example.
Years ago, when I did recruiting, I was doing work for a hedge fund and they had asked me to find someone for them. As soon as they receive the resume, they went on to Google and found that this person who they were going to be bringing on for a trading assistant role had lots of trading losses. This individual would be in contact with proprietary information for their trading model that they could appropriate and use for themselves. Suffice it to say, they didn’t interview this person, let alone consider hiring him.
Lots of little things make up what a firm is going to look for in your background, They’re going to look for things that are incongruent–The bachelor experience that relates to the job and how you’re presenting yourself. They’re going to be looking for personality quirks. The more senior you are, the more they’re hoping to find positive things about you. But they’re also going to find some of the negative things, too. So make sure your online persona is cleaned up before you start sending out resumes. And if you haven’t done that, it’s time to do it now.
