What Recruiters Know That You Don’t: Many Interviewers Have No Attention Span

What Recruiters Know That You Don’t: They Are Going to Backchannel Reference Check

One thing recruiters know that most job hunters don’t is that interviewers have no attention span. As you’re talking on and on and on, about all the great things that you’ve done, they’re thinking about lunch, the next meeting, where they’re going to meet their wife, husband, or partner, and other completely irrelevant things to listening to you.

Keep your answers concise– a minute, maybe a minute and a half tops. That’s longer than you think. Practice answers to predictable interview questions to keep them within that amount of time. Same thing with your stories, keep them to a minute to a minute and a half tops. And if they really should go into more detail, finish off by saying ‘if you like, I can go into more detail for you.’
