What Recruiters Know That You Don’t: Job Descriptions Are Inaccurate

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Having interviewed many HR people for JobSearchTV.com on YouTube, all laughed when I said that job descriptions are 80% accurate.

“If I’m lucky,” one went so far as to acknowledge.

That’s because, with rare exceptions, few job descriptions are ever updated to reflect current requirements. Instead, when someone resigns or gives notice, the hiring manager will call the talent acquisition person they work with and ask, “Do you have that job description we used to hire Jeff? He just gave notice. Please post it on our website, send it to our recruiting resources, get it up on LinkedIn or anywhere else you post it, and see whom you can get on my calendar for Tuesday.” No one ever updates a previously approved job description.

As a result, if you’ve seen an ad or job description, you are typically aiming at the wrong target when you apply for a job or interview for it.

It is best to start every interview by asking, “Thanks for making time to meet with me today. I recall the job description (or Rhona the Recruiter told me about the job) but I wanted to get your take on the role. Would you tell me about the position as you see it and what I can do to help?

This way, you will get the actual requirements of the role and their current thinking about it at the beginning of the interview so you can talk about your experience that matters to them and not just talk about what you’ve done.
