What is the general answer to “Why do you want this job?”

Stupid Resume Mistakes– Objectives

What is the general answer to the interview question, “Why do you want this job?” Now, there are two ways to answer that. My personal favorite stems from my time in search where I had a couple of clients who asked that. My personal favorite was The New York Times, who would always, in the first HR interview—the very first interview, about 20 minutes in—have someone there who would ask that question. I would have candidates prep by explaining, “Why would I want to work at the Times? Why wouldn’t I want to work at the Times? This is a great organization, huge reputation, having an impact on the world.”

It’s not just what you say, but the enthusiasm with which you deliver the answer that makes all the difference in the world. So, give them some juice. Do a performance for them. It doesn’t commit you to anything. A little bit before the interview, you do a little research for some of the strong points about the firm and you basically ham it up for them.

The other way of answering the question is less effective, but I think it basically deals with the arrogant employer. If you’re dealing with someone who is, shall we say, difficult and they’re just putting a pressure interview on, and toward the end, they say, “So, why do you want to work for us?” the response is to say, “I’m still learning about your organization. I’m not ready to commit that I want to work here. I’m hearing a lot of great things, but I need to know a lot more in order to feel like I really want to work for you.”

And they’ll say, “What do you need to know?” and you should be prepared with some questions for them, like, “What are expectations going to be like?” I’ve got some questions that you ask at the end of an interview in my video course called “The Ultimate Job Interview Framework.” It’s available on Udemy, but the easiest way to find it is by going to JobSearch.Community. You can also order it on Skillshare if you happen to be a member there. It’s also on Learndesk, and you can order it as a paperback or a Kindle book on Amazon. So, that’s the way I would address it.
