what are your hobbies?

What Are Your Hobbies? | JobSearchTV.com

This is a question that lets you separate yourself from all the beaten-down people firms interview . . . if you understand how to answer.

Cover Letters That Stand Out

What are your hobbies? Believe it or not, that’s a valid interview question. Why? What do they really want to care? What do they want to know about my hobbies? Why do they even care? I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, a career and leadership coach. I help job hunters be better on interviews, hire people hire more effectively, manage, lead, resolve workplace issues.

And the reason for this is it’s a firm that cares about personality. They may like weird, but it’s an opportunity to put your personality out there, and not just sit there like a lump and go, “all I do is work and commute. That’s all I do. I play with the children from time to time.”

So for example, you might talk. . . I’ll use myself as an example. I might say something along the lines of “I love the Giants football team. It’s been a painful experience the last few years, but I love Giants football. Watch all the games. It was hard during COVID because I’m not in a place where I can get all the games. I love the Giants.” Or “I’m involved with a nonprofit. And it’s committed to . . . ” and I’d talk about what the not for profit is involved with.

Why Does Branding Make a Difference to You?

And you may do more mundane things like, “I go to my kids’ soccer games, and it’s a lot of fun talking with people, cheering them on.” But they’re looking for life from you. They want to see that you’ve got some personality, and it hasn’t all been beaten out of you by previous employers. So, don’t hesitate to become bigger and more grand.

“I read a lot. I love reading. You know, when I finish work, the first half hour after I get home is I get out the current book I’m reading and hit the book hard.”

“What are you reading?” And then you talk about it. What you’re enjoying,  some of the struggles you may be having with some of the ideas in it. Now if you’re reading things that are a little risque, let’s skip those books. But let them see your personality. That’s what they’re trying to find out about you.
