What Are the Biggest Mistakes Job Hunters Make?

What Are the Biggest Mistakes Job Hunters Make?

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Here are some of the biggest mistakes job seekers make:
Assuming too much about the job and not asking enough questions during the interview. Job seekers often over-prepare by studying the job description and assuming they know what the hiring manager is looking for. Instead, they should go into the interview with an open mind and ask questions to determine what the hiring manager is looking for both emotionally and psychologically, not just skill-wise.
● They should try to understand what the previous person in the position was like and why they are no longer there. This will give them insight into the company culture and the expectations of the role.
● Forgetting to say thank you. After an interview, job seekers should always send a thank you card or email to the hiring manager and everyone else they interviewed with. They should also follow up with a phone call a few days later. This shows that they are interested in the position and that they are appreciative of the interviewer’s time.
Trusting recruiters too much. Job seekers should be wary of recruiters who ask them where else they are interviewing. This is often a sign that the recruiter is planning to send one of their other candidates to that company. Instead, job seekers should be confidential with their job search and only tell recruiters where they are willing to be sent.
Not networking. Many job seekers only focus on applying to jobs that are advertised. However, many jobs are never advertised, and networking is a great way to learn about these opportunities. Job seekers should build relationships with people in their field and let them know that they are looking for a job. Almost half of all jobs are found through people that a job seeker’s immediate network knows.
Not being prepared for the interview. Job seekers should always research the company and the position before an interview. They should also practice answering common interview questions. Showing up unprepared makes a job seeker look bad and hurts their chances of getting the job.
Dressing inappropriately for the interview. Job seekers should always dress professionally for an interview, even if the company has a casual dress code. Dressing inappropriately can make a job seeker look unprofessional and hurt their chances of getting the job.
Not having intelligent questions to ask the interviewer. Job seekers should always come to an interview prepared with questions to ask the interviewer. This shows that they are interested in the position and that they have done their research.
Canceling interviews or calls at the last minute. Job seekers should avoid canceling interviews or calls at the last minute unless it is absolutely necessary. This can make them look unprofessional and unreliable.
Ghosting. Ghosting is when a job seeker disappears during the interview process, such as by not showing up for an interview or not responding to calls or emails. This is extremely unprofessional and can damage a job seeker’s reputation.
Stating a salary target and then hopping it. Job seekers should be honest about their salary expectations. If they state a target and then try to negotiate a higher salary once they receive an offer, it can make them look untrustworthy.
Trying to change the job during the interview process. Job seekers should be clear about their job requirements from the beginning. Trying to change the job during the interview process, such as by asking for less travel or a different location, can waste everyone’s time.
Trying to negotiate the job offer after saying yes. Once a job seeker has accepted a job offer, it is generally considered unprofessional to try to negotiate a higher salary or other benefits.
Not taking ownership of their job search. Job seekers need to take ownership of their job search and not blame others for their lack of success. They need to be willing to learn and grow, and they need to be persistent in their efforts.
● Job seekers should be prepared, professional, and honest throughout the interview process. They should also be willing to network and take ownership of their job search. By avoiding these common mistakes, job seekers can increase their chances of landing their dream job.
