Video Interview Mistakes | JobSearchTV.com

I don’t understand why so many years into video interviews and video meetings, people still make these stupid mistakes.

Why Should Branding Make a Difference to You?

Multiple years into video conferencing, and people are still making mistakes on video interviews, I want to point out a couple of them so that this way you don’t fall victim, caused your own victimhood, I should say, in the process.

Now, the first one is, you’ve been on a lot of these; this is a no brainer. And unfortunately, there are some things that go wrong. So the first thing is, I’m finding people have a lot of windows open, resources on their computer are taxed, and I keep getting the messages about limited, you know, weak connection. And you don’t want that to pop up during an interview, because sometimes that affects your audio. And with that, if you’re doing this on your phone, don’t be in the car. Don’t be in a place where you have to hold your phone without locking your elbow in place. Check the camera, audio background resources on the device, your lighting in order to make sure you present well.

Also, I know when I interview people for my YouTube channel and podcast, I record as a video and eye contact isn’t there. The camera isn’t set up at the right level for video. And thus, they’re looking to one side. It’s looking down at them. And as a result, you don’t make connection with the person and connection is huge when doing a video interview.

Also, there are times where you might be able to present to people using slides or show your resume or some aspect of your work. And the other person has this enabled and you’re not asking for the opportunity to share something on your screen. The result winds up being you miss an opportunity to present well.

And lastly, this is the real dumb one. You don’t confirm the time zone. Now someone like me has software for scheduling purposes, that automatically calculates the other person’s timezone and you don’t do that. In other cases. Sometimes people are saying four o’clock, you’re saying ‘Sure.’ And they’re in Michigan, you’re in California, and this gets out of whack. So, always confirm timezones so that this way you’re not waiting for them or they’re not waiting for you.
