Transforming Your Job Search

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Introduction

Welcome to our blog post where we will be discussing Marty Gilbert’s approach to job searching. Marty Gilbert is the founder and CEO of North Shore Executive Networking Group, the largest and fastest-growing job networking and coaching organization in the Chicago area. With over 7,000 members and continuous growth, Marty has helped more than 1,700 individuals secure new careers and career opportunities through his coaching efforts.

The “What the Hell” Approach

So, what is this “What the Hell” approach to job searching? Marty Gilbert describes it as a proactive marketing model that focuses on standing out from other job seekers. He believes that the key to a successful job search is the ability to differentiate oneself from the crowd by defining and reaching their target audience, engaging them, and ultimately getting them to help or want to speak to you about an opportunity.

The “What the Hell” approach consists of 13 different moves, which we will discuss a few of in this session. These moves are bold and proactive, aimed at getting noticed and engaging your target audience. Marty emphasizes that most job seekers act like everyone else, and that is the problem. By being different and taking bold actions, you can set yourself apart and increase your chances of success.

The Power of a Strong Cover Letter

One of the key moves in the “What the Hell” approach is to craft a strong cover letter. Marty believes that cover letters sell, and many job seekers miss out on opportunities because they take a passive approach to their job search. Simply submitting their resume online and hoping for a response is not effective.

Marty suggests taking a proactive approach by sending out personalized and compelling cover letters. Instead of just submitting your resume, identify the three or four most important requirements of the job and demonstrate how your background aligns with those requirements. A well-written cover letter that connects your achievements to the key requirements of the job can set you apart from other applicants.

The Hidden Job Market

Another important aspect of the “What the Hell” approach is tapping into the hidden job market. Marty defines the hidden job market as the jobs that are not advertised. While some jobs may not be advertised because they are still in the planning stages, there are many opportunities that are simply not advertised properly.

Marty encourages job seekers to develop a target list of companies they are interested in and create a hierarchy based on industries and specific companies. Additionally, he advises identifying the five or six key individuals within each company that you want to connect with. By creating this targeted marketing campaign and reaching out to these individuals, you can tap into the hidden job market and potentially create opportunities.

Turning Your Network into a Sales Team

Marty emphasizes the importance of turning your network into a sales team. Just like products are sold through direct or indirect sales organizations, you are the product in this case. Marty suggests being clear about your target industries, companies, and the type of people you want to connect with, and making it easy for your network to help you.

One of the powerful features of LinkedIn is the ability to search for connections of connections. Marty recommends using the “Connections of” feature to find people who may be connected to the companies or industries you are interested in. By leveraging your network in this way, you can ask for introductions and expand your reach.

Conclusion

The “What the Hell” approach to job searching is all about taking bold and proactive actions to stand out from the crowd. By crafting strong cover letters, tapping into the hidden job market, and leveraging your network effectively, you can increase your chances of success in your job search.
