How To Spot A Toxic Workplace (Part 1)

How do you deal with ambiguity professionally? I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. They started to call me The Big Game Hunter when I did recruiting. I used to hunt down leaders and staff for organizations, did it for a long time in the US and Canada. Now, people hire me for no BS coaching and career advice globally. That can involve a job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading better, a holistic look at your career, and helping make it easier for you. After all, it’s nice to have some solutions to problems or someone you can bounce ideas off of.

Now answering this question, which is why you want came to this video. And it’s really very easy. So you might just pause for a second and go, ‘Hmm. I think the first thing I do is try and figure out what the outcome is we’re trying to achieve. And then from there identify some of the questions I have.  After all, language is sometimes imprecise, I want to make sure I’m on the right page with my manager or my leader, whoever it is. So I’ll have some questions to get clarity on particular points. And then I’ll act on it.

So it’s really not a hard question because this really is the way everyone does it. So the fact that they’re asking this question indicates that they’ve been surprised by some of the things people have said previously. So again, you know, what you want to do is figure out where they’re trying to get to, ask questions to get clarity, and you’re asking questions of the different stakeholders that might be involved. And if there’s conflict between the stakeholders, you’re going to say, ‘I’m hearing one thing from this person, something else from this person? Can I ask the two of you to get together and get clear about what it is you need me to do? Because I want to make both of you happy. And then from there, take action.
