Recession-Proofing Your Career: Avoid Being in The Roles That Get Cut
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
There are certain jobs that are usually targeted for layoffs. Don’t be in one of those jobs.
When firms are cutting back, where do they cut back?
Well, it’s pretty simple. If you’re in a role where you’re thinking about how things should be done, that’s one of the places where cuts occurred. If you’re managing people you’re susceptible to be targeted, too, because, for example, if you’re managing five people, they’re going to give seven to one person, 8 to another. They’ve got it covered!
So one way of recession-proofing your career is being in roles that are less susceptible to being cut– doing roles. People who do stuff can be cut, but they’re not targeted as quickly, often because they make less money. And firms still need people who do stuff. They need fewer people who manage. They need a lot less of the people who think about how things should be done.
