This question can be asked of someone at a manager level and above. The first 5 points are fairly standard. Number 6 is the winning point!

Tough Interview Questions for Leaders: What Qualities Should a Leader Demonstrate?

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, and people hire me for no BS career advice globally. I want to give you one of those tough interview questions that you would at a manager level or someone in leadership might be asked as part of your job search and part of your interviews. And the question is, how do you get the most out of your people?

I think that’s a wonderful question, because it’s very revealing. Certainly, you don’t want to start off by saying, ‘you know, I sit on their heads and make sure they do everything I think of proactively.’ Obviously, you don’t want to come across as being a micromanager. But you do want to communicate with your team certain things. The first five should be no-brainers.

You set a standard and expectations for them so they know what to expect, and what you’re going to demand of them. You set the rules for their performance– what they can do, what they can’t do, and that if there’s a reason to question some of those that they can come to you. You recognize and acknowledge their successes visibly, publicly, and to them, of course. You communicate frequently and give clear feedback about how they’re doing, both from a positive standpoint and emphasize the positive, and at times, you know, the things that they need to do better.

You set an organization that’s diverse, because similar people with similar responsibilities can get a job done. But eventually it gets tedious. And thus, diverse teams statistically improve employee engagement, have higher retention rates, and a better collaboration. Especially these days, don’t miss the diversity pieceWhat kind of leader are you of this.

The last one is the homerun one. And I don’t want to claim credit for this. There’s  a coach, Lance Secretan, who’s adopted this idea of The Castle Principles. Castle is an acronym that stands for courage, authenticity, service, truthfulness, love and effectiveness.

At times, you have to be courageous in your leadership. And that is to challenge people, accept challenges from your organization and defend your people. That often takes courage. Being authentic, I don’t think I have to define what that is. Be of service to them to your user population, and make sure that people know about it. You’re truthful, people believe that you love them. It isn’t just simply respecting them, but they really think that you care. And that in your leadership, you’re effective.

CASTLE’s that acronym. And if you can remember a few of those points, if not all of them, that’s gonna distinguish you from the competition who may feature some of the first five, if not all of them. But this one is the home run.
