The Lies We Tell Ourselves | The No BS Coaching Advice Podcast

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

A coaching call with someone reminds me and perhaps you of how destructive the lies we tell ourselves can be.

I want to talk with you today about the lies you tell yourself.

One thing I know about most people is (there are exceptions because Lord knows, there are sociopaths out there) that we try to be remarkably honest in their relationships with friends, family, and the world at large.  We try to be honest with coworkers.  We try to do our best.  We try to communicate accurately, and ably.

Then there is the part where we talk to ourselves and then those voices within our head tell us lies.  Lies that we took on from other people.

I was talking with someone today who is telling himself the long way that he could not make any money.  That he was “financially unable.”  What happened?  As we spoke about, his father had had that struggle.  His father had expressed time and again that “if only she and her brother had done something differently, he wouldn’t have to agonize and be frustrated” and all that kind of stuff. Out of care for her father, she took on the line that maybe she should make any money.

What lies have you taken on?  What messages do you give to yourself that are pure fiction that are coming out of an episode from earlier in your life where out of care for someone or a misinterpretation of the message, you are hurting yourself?

Think about.

You are hurting yourself by taking on these messages that are just pure fiction.

You can start working on this by yourself by saying, ” Ah! That’s interesting!  Is that 1 of those voices?”  Or 1 of those interruptions that causes you to question the voice.  You can also work with a coach.  I, of course, were someone else   That will help you dissect and help you work in different directions.
