The Employer Con
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Employers are all trying to con you. What’s the con?
The Easiest Way to Negotiate a Higher Salary for Yourself
I want to talk with you about the con that employers use. I know you have a con, too but I want to talk with you about their con.
From the time you 1st interview what is starting to happen is everyone’s trying to create an impression about one another. The employer version of the con is to say, “A, look man. I’m your my pal. We are like family around here. We care about people.”
And they have these videos on YouTube. You do searches all over the place and you see having a great time and then you start looking a little bit further. ![]()
If you look at the video they show you the name of the person there . Like I was . . watching some corporation’s video and. I decided I would take a quick look at their LinkedIn profile. They don’t work there anymore. They are gone.
I will tell you that there is a lot of BS that employers give you… Like your manager. Your manager talks with you about how important you are. How what you do so critical to the organization and, you know, it’s critical up until the point that they need to get rid of you because business sucks.
So, I just want to encourage you don’t buy the bull when they interview, you. Don’t buy this, “we are like family around here, you know?” And all the social media stuff that they are all being encouraged to develop to get, excuse my language, here, but it’s kind of like a guy trying to get into a woman’s pants or a guy trying to get into a guy’s pants if you are gay, or 2 women… You get the idea.
It’s all about the con. They are trying to seduce you and the end of the day, you are disposable and don’t forget it .
Because the next recession is coming, I don’t know when, but there is going to be another recession and millions are going to be fired again. These are all people who work told by their boss how important they are and how they were critical to the organization and there work mattered.
It’s bullshit. Absolute bullshit. So, I’m giving you no BS advice designed to help you play big. Don’t be a peon. Don’t be small. You play big and look after your own interests because you are the chief executive of your business and that’s your business and you have responsibility for yourself and for stockholders which were your wife/ husband/partner/kids/pets and looking you for your interests.
Otherwise, you are screwed.
