The Easiest Way to Become Known Professionally | Career Angles

A friend of mine used to joke about opportunity. Even knock on his desk three times and say, “Did you hear that sound? That’s opportunity knocking.” But how do you get opportunity to knock on your door.
Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m a coach who helps people professionally in a number of different ways. And here I’m going to talk with you about a way to improve your career development and your visibility, not just simply in terms of job hunting, but in terms of opportunities for exposure that can serve you for a long time. So the easiest way, and I speak from the perspective of being LinkedIn member 7653, of the 675 million people on the platform, is using LinkedIn.
Now, if you’re working, most of the time, you’re not thinking about being online on LinkedIn. And LinkedIn is a fabulous resource for you. So, as a resource when you’re facing a problem, yes, you can ask people within your organization but sometimes the people you’re asking don’t know much more than you. So, you can go outside the organization reach out for help. But it’s also a place Where you can start developing reputation for yourself.
So, for example, you can write; you can post; you can share posts. For example, I’m going to do this as a pre LinkedIn example, but it works. There was a woman I knew many years ago, who in order to connect with celebrities, and financiers, would forward them an article that she thought might be interesting to them, and attach a note. And that was that.
LinkedIn has that opportunity in scale and, thus, you can share other people’s ideas and thoughts with a brief comment and start to get noticed. It does not take a lot of time. Fundamentally, your goal is very simple. You want more people to know of your existence.
You can join groups and participate in groups. You can post; you can write. There’s a lot that you can do. And, very simply, I’ll say to you that the skills needed to find a job are different than those needed to do a job. For you, in order to find work, more importantly, to have work come to you, you want to start developing a reputation where, you know, Lord knows, with all the videos and podcasts I do, many people know, like, trust and respect me because of that, because of the effort that I put in.
I want to be clear, this is not going to be something where people are going to stop in their tracks after you doing this for one day, one week or one month, and suddenly go, “Wow! They’re fabulous.” This is a career strategy. It’s something that you can do over the course of time. You can log on once a week. That’s it. And just respond to a few things. You can do it while you’re commuting on your phone, and use the LinkedIn app in order to do it.
But fundamentally, the easiest way to start becoming known professionally, and to start having people reach out to you, is participating on LinkedIn instead of just now being a consumer on Facebook.
