The Basic Career Transition Formula: How to Move From Your Current Job To Your Ideal Career
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
In today’s fluid work environment, it can be challenging to know when and how to make a career transition. Navigating a career transition requires strategic planning. A smooth career transition is more than just switching from one job to another; it’s about staying happy and fulfilled while also charting a course for continued success in the long term. Making a successful career transition hinges on preparation, research, and execution. It’s not an easy process, but it’s also not as complicated as it may seem at first glance. With the right approach and support network, anyone can successfully move from their current job to their ideal career. Here are several key elements to any successful career transition:
Know Your Reason for Making a Career Change
When evaluating whether to make a transition, it’s important to understand why you want to make the change. Knowing your true motivation and purpose behind the transition will give you greater clarity and help you to set more realistic expectations during the process. Ask yourself the following questions to better understand your motivation behind making a career transition: What do you like and dislike about your current work? What do you see as a challenge or opportunity in your current job (I see these as a positive)? What are your passions and interests? If you could wave a magic wand and make it happen, what would a typical day in your ideal career look like? Why does that career or type of work excite you? What unique strengths and skills do you bring to it?
Commit to Taking Action
Making a transition and moving from one career to another doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, effort and planning. Sometimes, it requires making a few small steps that lead you to a large career pivot. However, even if you make one big change, it’s important to remember that it takes time to make that adjustment. You’ll likely go through a period of transition, where many things seem out of your control, or may feel like things aren’t happening quickly enough. That’s natural. While you may feel like you are thrashing around trying to figure out what to do, commit to taking action and pursuing it over time.
Do Research to Understand Your Options
Career transition involves a significant amount of research to learn and understand your options and then make good decisions about next steps. Start by researching your current job and industry to understand the current economic conditions, growth rates, and future outlook for your specific field. What are the salary ranges for specific positions? What educational and skill requirements do job postings require? What are your transferable skills? What are the job outlook and employment opportunities for your field? What is the current economic outlook for your field? Next, research your ideal career to understand how it fits into your current situation and future goals. What do you love about your ideal career? What are its salary ranges? What educational and skill requirements do job postings require? What are your transferable skills? What are the job outlook and employment opportunities for your ideal field? What is the current economic outlook for your ideal field?
Create A Plan
One of the most important aspects of a successful career transition is developing a plan. This plan should include a timeline of when you’d like to make the transition, what goals you’d like to achieve, and the activities you’ll need to take in order to get there. Your plan doesn’t have to be perfect. You can modify it as you learn more. Write down your goals and milestones and create a realistic timeline in order to avoid feeling overwhelmed and defeated by the process. You can also use a create and use a checklist to make sure you don’t miss anything important along the way. What you write it down on, whether pen and paper, or software, is less important than that you write it down. Having a clear plan for your career transition will give you greater confidence, help you to stay focused, and keep you on track towards success.
Develop Additional Skills
While it’s important to research your options and create a plan for your transition, it’s also important to learn and develop new skills that will be helpful in your new role. Learning new skills will help you to become and stay marketable and relevant in a constantly evolving work environment. It’s also a great way to add some extra value to your work. You can cultivate skills in your field or industry, or you can learn new skills that will be helpful in your new role. Find out what employers in your new industry or career are looking for in people and develop skills that you don’t currently have. Often, people use their current job as an opportunity to learn new skills that will be helpful in a new role.
4 Things to Consider When Changing Careers
Identify Landing Positions
While most people think of a transition as a big change that occurs all at once, typically, it’s more likely to occur over time. There may be no specific date when you decide to make the transition, or one may present itself as a good opportunity. A transition can be as simple as making a change in the type of job you do or the industry you work in. You may also decide to make a more permanent or dramatic change in your career. Identify companies and industries where your skills and experience will be most valuable. Research positions that you’d like to have with companies that you admire. Make a note of opportunities that may be available in your current field.
Write Your Script
Once you’ve gathered your research and developed new skills, it’s time to put those to use by communicating your desired career transition to others. Before you do so, make sure you’ve written down what you want to say and have rehearsed it until it sounds natural. You’ll may also want to let your current employer know that you’re interested in making a transition because they may have options internally to let you do it. This will also give you a head start on your career transition and allow you to put your plan into action. You can also let others know that you’re open to new opportunities and may be making a transition in the future. Use LinkedIn and other social media platforms to broadcast your interests and upcoming plans.
Network Your Brains Out!
It’s important to build a strong network of colleagues and mentors who can support you in your transition. Your network should be made up of both people in your area of expertise and people who are outside of your field and industry. This will help you to stay connected to valuable resources in your current field as well as gain access to new opportunities in your desired field. While you may not be able to jump ship right away, building relationships now will help you to stay informed and up-to-date in your current field of expertise while also putting yourself in a position to make informed decisions about your future.
Change the way you look at your current job
Finally, remember that your current job is not your future job. This is important to keep in mind as you make your transition. It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that you need to completely change everything about your life at once, but this is not the best strategy. Instead, try to change the way you look at your current job. See it as a stepping stone to where you want to go next. You can even treat it as a means of gathering intel on your desired field. Your current job may be a great opportunity to learn more about your desired field. Take advantage of on-the-job training opportunities and use your current position to get a leg up in the world of your desired field. This will help you to gain relevant skills and experience that you can then use to make a smoother transition once the time is right.
Conclusion
All in all, career transition can seem like a daunting, overwhelming process. But when you break it down into its basic components, it becomes easier to navigate. Start by knowing your why, committing to taking action, doing your research, building new skills, identifying landing positions, and writing your script. With these five steps, you can be well on your way to a successful career transition.
