4 Video Interview Red Flags to Pay Attention to | JobSearchTV.com
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
I skipped over things that should be seen as a problem in other formats. Here are 4 red flags that surface on virtual interviews.
You’re scheduled for a video interview. Yay! But suddenly you’re noticing little things that bother you. And I want to call attention to four of them that should.
The first one is the degree to which they make it difficult to schedule. You know, let’s get practical. You’re doing an interview with a firm, and they make it hard to schedule the appointments. People aren’t available. There’s a back and forth. And last minute rescheduling that’s going on all the time. What’s the message? This isn’t all that important a job tip for us to fill, or, we’re so overworked and so overwhelmed, we don’t have time to do this, even though we have to. So that’s the first thing I always call attention to.
Number two is you’re kept waiting online for more than 10 minutes without explanation because, after all, they can text you. They can email you. And if they don’t show, and there’s certainly no explanation for the no show, you know, that’s a red flag for you.
The third thing is they seem distracted or preoccupied during the interview, and maybe even go so far as to seem bored. So just recognize that this can be a problem for you that could be a signal of something.
Lastly, and this to me is the ultimate rudeness, they keep the camera off, or it’s never on to begin with. Let’s say they turn it off during the process, or they keep it off altogether. The message that they’re sending is ‘we can watch you’ because remember with Zoom, they can see you if your cameras on. But you can’t see them. They’re multitasking while they’re doing this interview, and, thus, all of these kind of signal that these are commodity positions in the way they see it. They’re not spending time selling to you, connecting with you, like you’re supposed to do with them. They have a different attitude about themselves and their position in this process. They are superior to you. Do you want to step into a situation where you’re dating someone, and they’ve got an attitude? Because that’s really what they’re showing? They’ve got an attitude, and you’re not particularly important to them.
So recognize these red flags. You have to make your own decision. I’m not going to tell you to turn it down. But I am going to tell you, there’s going to come a point where you can investigate what’s going on. For example, if the camera’s off, are you having trouble with your camera or do you not want me to see you?’ ‘You know, all the rescheduling? What’s going on? It seems like you guys are incredibly busy that you have to constantly reschedule.’ You know, it’s not difficult if you don’t sound defensive or annoyed or angry to ask these questions to get greater clarity.
