EP 1052 How do I answer when a recruiter asks me “Are you actively interviewing, and do you have any deadlines, pending offers, etc.?”

Summary

How do you answer the question, "Are you actively interviewing?  

What are they really trying to find out?"

There are a few ways to answer this question based upon where you are in your job search.

If you have been out of work for 6 months and they asked this question, they are tossing you a lifeline. After all, if it is been 6 months that you've been out of work, they are thinking that there was something wrong with you. It gives you a chance to say, "I took a few months off. I never did that at any point in my life before that. The kids have grown up. I decided to take it a little easy.  It's time for me to get back to work."  That's the way to answer the question if there is been a period of time where you been out of work.

If They Recruited You . . .

Let's work with the assumption that they are recruiting you and they asked this question.  Then, the purpose of the question is very different than when asked of the person is been out of work for 6 months.

Here, they are trying to figure out whether (1) you are out interviewing and where you are in your job search. (2) I've had people who contacted me about position side advertised for, and they have 3 job offers and expect my client to jump through hoops to compete with those other offers in one day. after one meeting that lasts for 1 minute.

It doesn't work that way. You went out on a bunch of dates before you decide to get married, right? Employers are no different.

The implication for the person who was recruited and is asked this question is to figure out whether we were lucky enough to just find you and your background fits the job or did we stumble across someone who is actively interviewing and is been on 27 different interviews… You get the idea.

The correct way to answer if you have been on a few interviews is to say, "Yes, I have been on a few interviews recently."

"Where are you in your search?"

"I don't think I'm close to an offer. I have had firsts and seconds at a few places. Firms seem interested, but I don't have any offers yet and no one is talking to me like I am getting one yet. That's a good way to deflect the question.

Now, if you are close to an offer, from the recruiter's perspective, they are thinking, "Why should I invest time in this person when I not going to make any money or my client will take too long for this person and their timetable. I know this hiring manager can take a month to even decide to interview this person."  On and on and on.

From the standpoint of the employer-recruiter, based upon what they know of the hiring manager, they are trying to figure out whether they have the time to get you into the process and bring it to a successful end.

If you say something like, "I have a few things I seem to be on final rounds for but I don't have any job offers yet"

"What would keep you from accepting an offer from 1 of those firms?"

"Well, money, of course. After all, I'm not looking to take a lateral or less. If they offer too little, I'm not going to join."

"How much would you be looking for?"

"Well, that depends upon the opportunity. I obviously want to contribute to an organization . . . "

I'm trying to give you a sense of the flow of the conversation as you answer questions.

Yes, there is ageism AND you don’t have to make it easy for them

Summary

I thought I would do a video today that talks about some of the dumb things that older professionals do when they're looking for work. Now, I’ve arbitrarily pick over 50 but this applies to people who could be in their mid-40s, as well as my age. In case you haven't noticed, that's a lot of gray in there. I'm not just over 50, okay?
So I'll simply start off with the biggest mistake and I want to contextualize it by saying, you know that there's ageism in the workforce, right? And people do get discriminated against on the basis of age. And then you write a resume that says 25 years of experience. 30 years. 40 years of experience doing such and such and, thus, what we're doing in submitting your resume is making it easy for the algorithm to spot the fact that you're an older worker and that their system can arbitrarily screen you out.
Or, even if it's a someone who's actually reading it, you're announcing, "Hey, I'm old." Seriously, and you know, there's ageism so why do you make it easy for them?
Now, on the other hand, you have a choice and that's to use your age as an asset and that can wind up working very well. If you are a "very seasoned individual," I don't mean that seasoned by age but seasoned by seniority.
If you're a veteran individual who's going for something SVP, C-suite, anything along those lines, there, the number of years might make sense. But, even when you construct your resume, you have to think smart. So often, when I was reading lots and lots of resumes, when I was doing a search, I would see lots of irrelevant experience in the resume.
They'd emphasize things that were basically back in the antiquities of ancient history or their ancient history, rather than emphasizing their current work. Now, sometimes, they did that because the more interesting work was the older work, not the more recent work and I will tell you from again, from screening, employers really care about the recent experience not the stuff that you think is relevant from 25 years ago. They're never going to see it in your resume because, frankly, they're only going to go down one or two page downs in order to find it.
Now, you may think, "okay, so I'm going to use a functional resume and that's going to fool them." It won't fool them. Most of them will ask for a chronological one because they know the trick. So, think in term s of how you can position your current work in ways that advantage you against this job and get rid of numbers of years of experience like 25, 30,40 years of experience. Remove graduation dates.
Now, if you're going through a background . . . Unless you went back to school to get that degree . . . And you were like mid-career. So, then it's okay to do it. But if you're going to . . . for example, I graduated college in 71, would I put 1971 in my resume. No. I might put my Master's that I got in 1998 and even that one's questionable today. That's as of the recording today, that's 20 years ago. So, think in terms of what appeals to the audience that isn't going to cause you to be arbitrarily rejected.
Now, a couple of small things and these could be general statements, but I think they're good reminders. I want to get rid of your objective on the resume. Seriously. No one cares what you want.
You need to tailor your resume to demonstrate your fit. If you have this objective that's a little bit off from what the nature of the position is, you're inviting them to reject you. Seriously.
One other thing. I think it's a big one. I want to talk to those of you who are doing career change. You know, it's very hard to start from scratch in a new career that has nothing to do with your previous one. Now, I'm not talking about if you're going to go into business for yourself. But, let's say, you want to become an accountant or a lawyer or an engineer and your background up until that point had nothing to do with those professions.
Firms look at your background and they see a rookie at age 55. At age 60 and they think to themselves, "you know . . . " And stupid but this is how they think. They think to themselves "I've only got this person for a couple of years." Now, again, it's stupid because a 25-year-old or 22-year-old, they’ve got the same issue with because they're not going to sit there for any length of time.
So, if you're going to market yourself for a complete career change, which is harder to do if you're dealing with a full-time position, you need to have the body of your email address this by saying, "Hey, look. I'm in the midst of a career change. No, I'm not 22. However, I want to put down roots in an organization. And if you're worried about how much time you're going to get from me. Well, frankly think about it. How much time are you going to get from the 22-year-olds or the 24-year-olds. They are not going to stay with you for 20 years. Obviously, I'm not either but, you know, I'm someone who's demonstrated loyalty and dedication. This is important to me. I'd love to have a chance to talk with you about my background.”

EP 1048 There has been no response to emails or instant messaging. I don’t want to bother my boss. Why aren’t they getting back to me?

Summary

I was asked, "How do I get a recruiter to respond to a salary negotiation?"

The person has been an intern and they have made an offer to them.  The recruiter for this firm hasn't been responding to emails or instant messaging and the intern is frustrated.  They want to find out how they can reach this person for negotiating.

Here are a few points:

As an intern who is converting to full-time staff, you are small fish on their plate.  I have other, more important fish to fry, too.  HR has a lot of things on their plate; they have hiring managers who are demanding service; they are interviewing; they are trying to fill positions; they are writing a heads… There are many things that HR is doing… You are not a big concern for them.
This HR person may be out of the office.  They may be traveling. They may be doing campus recruiting, hence why they may not be responding to you.
You are right not to trouble your boss.  This is not a major priority.  If the rule, they offered you a job  and you have already done parts of this job before.  They will probably be asking themselves, "What's the big deal?  You knew what the price point was we brought you want for this internship?"
They just don't care.  There's no point or concern that they have, because, after all, it's not like you're the only intern on the planet or qualified to do this job.  There are others. Their desire to negotiate is really small.
Let me summarize for you where you stand.

On the one side there is a rock. On the other side, there is a hard place.  You are somewhere between the two.

If your goal is to just make the connection and they are not respond, send an email to HR with the subject line, "Are you okay?"  The message may read something along the lines of, "I have emailed and I am do you and had not received a response.  I have a few questions about the job offer.  Would you give me a call, please?  I just want to make sure you are okay?  My experience of you is that you would normally get back to me but since I haven't heard, I just want to make sure that you are all right."

That will usually "guilt them" into surfacing.

Why Is It So Difficult for an Unemployed Person to Get a Job? | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 1042 The answer is simple and, no, it is not that all employers have entered into a conspiracy against unemployed people.

Summary

The question is, "Why is it so difficult for an unemployed person to get a job?"

To me, the answer involves confronting a belief that a lot of people have about all the bias that companies have about hiring unemployed people. That's the easy answer; the honest answer, the one that you don't want to hear is that (#1) you don't have the skills that the market wants or (#2) you don't know how to job hunt. Let me break it down for you.

In terms of job hunting, if you're not getting interviews, your resume stinks. If you getting interviews but not being invited back, you don't interview as well as you should. If you are being invited back and nothing is happening further, you are connecting with people as well as the need to.

See where I'm going with this? There are clear skills deficiencies that you have that can be corrected.

There are lots of different ways to learn how to do things better. Yes, you can hire a professional resume writer to write your resume for you. You can also join the site like mine, JobSearchCoachingHQ.com, where I have curated information that can pick you up all along the line and help you dissect the problems plus you can ask me questions so I can help you dissect it.

After all, as Malcolm Gladwell points out so well in, "Outliers," an expert would be someone with 10,000 hours of job search experience. You have how much? You are by no means an expert and you have about no idea what firms look for. You are guessing at it.

Get some help. That's the thing you really need at this point. It's not that firms go out of their way to discriminate (although some firms do for chronic long-term unemployed people). They do it because they believe that in a good job market, as they believe it is now, there is a reason why someone is unable to get a job for a long period of time. For those people, they use the fact that you been unemployed for a long period of time as code for, "Other people have screened he or she. They found you deficient. We're not gonna find anything different."

That's the problem – – you know how to do the search right. You're an amateur and you think you know how to do the search better than you do.

Tough message but one that needs to be heard.

Moving for a New Job? The Tax Code Has Changed | JobSearchTV.com

There is a surprise for job hunters in the tax code if you are relocating for a new job. I walk you through the consequences to you.

Summary

Taxes. Taxes. Taxes have changed in the United States in many respects, they are better for individual taxpayers but they have clearly changed and become more expensive if they have that you are relocating for a new job. For years, if you or in a situation where you are moving to a location 50 miles away from your current home, and you are paying your own relocation, that was deductible, whether or not you or itemizing or not.

The new law passed under Pres. Trump has changed that and it's useful for you to know this so you can make plans for it. Otherwise, you could be hit with a big surprise.

That deduction no longer exists. You may think to yourself, “well, I'll have the employer pay for relocation.” In the case where employers pay for relocation, there's another little surprise there. Weight tell you hear this one!

The money that is paid to relocate you is now taxable. Catch that one.

If you're receiving $5000 . . . $10,000 from an employer to relocate, that's now taxable income to you. Unless you save money somewhere along the line or receive a sign-on bonus in addition to compensate for that difference, you are going to be having a big surprise when it comes time to file your income taxes.

So, don't be surprised. Work this into the equation. Talk with the firm that is going to relocate you about a sign-on bonus to compensate for the fact that you now have taxable income.

Now, understand that sign-on bonus is taxable as well, but at least it will minimize the impact of the relocation money.

So, don't get surprised. Plan ahead and maybe you can find something close to home.

EP 731 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter helps to explain the format and reasoning behind what occurs at a panel interview and how to ace them every time.

Summary

Today, I'm going to talk with you about panel interviewing, which is a different sort of orientation and feel to it than a traditional interview. Why? Because 3 or 4 people are sitting opposite you putting you through "The Great Inquisition" to figure out how you fit.

How do you prepare for panel? Real easy. Let's start by figuring out who you are going to be sitting and facing, what their particular backgrounds are, what their role is in the organization and thus, you can figure out what their agenda is.

You see, the members of the panel aren't four people from the same group or department; often they are from related groups and departments. They may do similar things. They may interact with one another, but ultimately, they have a different agenda in mind.

The other thing to remember is what ever it is you may answer may engender a response from 1 of the other panel members. If the role, you may be talking to a panel member from one department (let's use IT as an example)... You may talk to member the programming team, but there was someone there representing the user community. They want to understand how your answer relates to them. It's not that they don't understand by your answer may trigger something for them.

Also remember that the 3 or 4 people there... They are all vying for their questions to come out. They are all looking for face time with you. They're all looking to evaluate because ultimately have to give you a thumb up or thumbs down at the end of this process.

As you answer questions, understand who you are talking to and what their role is. As you speak to the questioner, the person who poses the initial question to you, you start talking with them , but then start turning your head to start talking with the other people who are part of the panel. Always in your answer talking to the original question.

It is a subtle thing that allows you to do what is really important in the room-- that is trying to develop rapport with each person who is there.

Talking to a Previous Employee About the Hiring Manager | JobSearchTV.com


A coaching client asked me to show him how to find someone to speak with who previously worked for the firm they are interviewing with. Here’s how.

Summary

Someone asked me for more information about how to search for someone who works at a particular company. And my idea was, because this person is interviewing four particularly organization, he should talk with former employees to get some insight into the person he's meeting with had the culture of the organization. So I want to show you how to get to the area where you do that search.

So, I'm going to use a company here as an example. We’re going to use Accenture. It could be any company, and we're gonna ‘do an Accenture search. We’re going to do it in “People.” And once we’re there, we want to go to “All Filters.” And from “All Filters,” you have lots of different choices.

Now, I have a subscription where I am a paid customer, but I'm not a Sales Navigator or Recruiter function. But if you notice here, you can search by name, title. This is going to be “Current Company,” school they went to, connections. Where this is, (which is going to be in the United States), I'm not looking for current companies. I'm going over to the lower left to “Past Companies.”

Now, they happened to have a populated with Accenture, but you could put in any firm whatsoever into that area. As you can see, you could look at whether this is going to be an English-speaking profile, what industry this person might be in, the schools that they've attended, any number of criteria. But overall, the idea here is really very simple.

If you're looking for someone to speak with who previously worked at an organization, you go to the “All People” filters, Accenture, People (And I didn't put it in Accenture at that point). So again, People as bringing up everyone, I know which is currently 21000 some odd people I know, the “All Filters. “

Summary

I was asked why behavioral interviews questions work. What is a behavioral interview? I behavioral interview is a type of interview where questions start off, "tell me about a time when you…" You know questions where you are able to tell stories.

Even the toughest question… You can find the answer on the web. I but some of them on my blog, http://thebiggamehunter.us. Use the categories featuring the Bonhomme to pull up tough interview. I have so many of these questions the job hunters don't spend the time practicing.. You don't spend the time learning how to answer these questions. You don't spend the time and review. Just like you don't spend the time practicing how to answer simple questions like, "Tell me about yourself." You just think that you should walk in and when it. That's why employers use this type of question. So many job hunters are just too lazy to take the time to be a champion.

I'm going to use the metaphor of the athlete. When you think a process football team comes out on the field do you think they haven't practiced repeatedly all the same plays for years? Do you think a baseball player hasn't spent time in the batting cage learning how to hit? Do you think they don't practice defense of plays with cutoffs in order to execute them? Yet you think you can go on an interview and just show up.

Do the smart thing. Start learning how to answer these questions. After all, great athletes are paid millions and millions of dollars to practice how to perform. Entertainers, singers, actors and actresses are paid millions of dollars in order to execute on the stage and allow them to be loved by an audience and make their performance credible. And you shop on an interview. Never having rehearsed your lines. Does that make a lot of sense to you?
