EP 1375 Do HR professionals cross reference the applications they receive with other job openings they have?

Summary

I received a wonderful question. "Do HR professionals cross reference applications they receive with other openings that they have?"

The person that is writing is a technology professional and they continue on by saying, "since some positions have skills in common, do HR professionals cross reference applications with other jobs they have available and of applied for a role that might also be a fit for some other role?"

I'm going to give you the most blunt direct answer because I'm in no BS kinda guy. The answer is… It depends!

I know what they should do but here's the practicality to it. Each HR person is being graded on their performance against certain metrics that the firm has defined for them. Their job is to fill positions, not refer to someone else who feels positions.

It depends on how the system was set up. It depends on which person and which job you applied to. Let me go back to my 1st point about contacting the firm. Never EVER apply for a job through an applicant tracking system because that just puts you into the dreaded black hole. That means your resume is dependent upon whether the data dictionary (the definition of terms set up in the applicant tracking system) and your resume matchup.

Assuming that they do you actually get to a human being, the next thing is whether that person will actually think of a colleague or focus on their own job 1st? The answer is they are going to focus own their job first, then, MAYBE refer you to that other person in their HR organization for consideration. After all, they get no points for this; the other person does. Thus, they go sequentially rather than concurrently. After all, they don't want to have 2 or 3 managers competing over one person. That makes it harder for the firm so they go sequentially evaluating for one job before releasing you for a 2nd, or possibly, 1/3. From there, it is always going to be hit or miss, depending upon your performance on the 1st interview.

Let's assume you do well on the 1st interview and get to the hiring manager (or get through the technical interview and being brought back to meet the hiring manager, to use the example from the original question) after getting through the technical interview and they assess you for where your strengths really are, you get to the hiring manager and then are turned down. From there, they go back to your strengths as perceived on the technical interview and MAYBE you get referred to the other job. MAYBE you don't get referred because your technical skills were really best in that 1st area and not as good a fit for the 2nd or 3rd group.

Maybe you washed out on the 1st interview because you steak up the joint on what you claim to be very good at and they'll see a reason to bring you back for something else.

As a result, there are way too many variables to count on HR to refer you for another position. Those variables start off with:
1. Whether your resume actually makes it through
2. They're going to qualify you for one job at a time rather than multiples.
3. How your performance was on the 1st interview.
4. The mood of the HR person as to whether or not they make the referral

I know some people would disagree with me. "I would definitely refer." That is not my experience. I have heard stories from HR people who are not going to make the referral because it is not in their interest to do so.

There are way too many variables. I wouldn't count on it.

EP 1073 Why is it so darned hard? 

Summary

The question for today is, "What is it for some frustrating looking for a job?" It goes on to say, "When you are in school, nothing seems superhard. You work hard to get straight A's, do research and internships. After you graduate, the real tragedy begins. You apply for jobs, hoping at least to get interviews based upon your good academic record but get rejected all the time. Why is it so frustrating. Looking for a job?"

The answer is really very simple.

You were lied to when you are younger. The lie is that this is going to be good enough to get a job. In point of fact, there are different skills that they never teach you what university. The skills needed to get a job are different than the ones they have to do a job. So far, what you have decreed for yourself is that you got good grades. Well, there are a lot of people who got good grades, the same as you. What is the difference between you and 10,000 other students like you in your geographic area?

The answer is probably not a heck of a lot.

That's where it all starts. You have lied to me at the university level where they told you they getting good grades is the key to getting a good job, just like you were lied to. When you were a kid and told to be good, or else you wouldn't get into a good school. They got into the good school about the good grades and did everything that you are told and now you're not getting the good job even though you did everything right up until this point. As a result, learn the lesson that the advice was not right.

Yes, you had internships. Maybe you coasted. Maybe you worked very hard. It doesn't really matter. I don't know what jobs you been applying for. Often that is an issue because you up if you are applying for things that you are not qualified for, you are not going to be interviewed, let alone hired. Just because the people at the University told you to send your resume for this job doesn't mean they are take on it was right. Just because you have good grades doesn't mean anything to them. They just care that you bring a value to them or you can do something that they need to be done. If you don't have that value, you are just another barista to them.

There are a lot of reasons why this comes up, but the reason why you are not getting interviews usually boils down to that people have lied to you about what it is going to take to find that 1st job, just like the lies will continue once you get that 1st job, what it is going to take to get ahead.

Don't follow the conventional advice. All that happens if you do is the same thing that's happened to all those people in their 40s and 50s who wake up one day and are fired from their jobs and wonder, "Is that all there is?"

Start looking out for yourself as early as possible in your career because, trust me, your employer sure as hell isn't going to.

Networking Mistakes: Not Realizing You Are Being Noticed | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 1390 I tell a story about a mistake I made and its impact. Many of you do the same thing.

Summary

I want to tell you a story today about a networking mistake I made.

I will simply say that I have been part of a business networking group for a couple of years and I was being elevated to regional role. So I was sent off to training and, as it turns out, most of the people in the room where the training was occurring had already taken this course and many of them were owners of franchises within this business. So, I may have been the one newbie in the room actually receiving training. It was a very frustrating experience for me.

I would ask a question because I wanted to know the answer and was treated as though I was an ignorant buffoon. I got frustrated and let my frustration show at different times. I'm not blaming them, but at times, my frustration became apparent in the little facial gestures and in little comments I would make that I thought no one could hear but they could. Later on, as someone was talking, they made a comment about me that said, “Why is he here,” and I realized the impact of what I had done in how people perceived me.

That I was treated as being ignorant and didn't belong in the room . . . that's their problem. My problem was how I said that message to them and we all know how this happens in the workplace on a day-to-day basis where someone makes a snide comment, which is, frankly, what I did, and it gets noticed, picked up on and the person's career is hurt as a result of it.

in this group, at 1 point I made a comment that I didn’t think someone could hear and let my frustration show. I didn't try and persevere. I kind of shut down. Thus, I relayed the story to you about realizing the little things that get noticed, filed away that creates the impression with people that isn't beneficial.

When you're in a networking situation, you want to be all in. You want to be trying to connect with people, trying to do outreach, picking up the relationships and not holding back. Even if you swatted away as I was by the instructor a couple of times and who was just very frustrating for me, it's irrelevant. My behavior is what hurt me because the room was with her and not with me. I had done nothing to win the room over.

This may sound complicated; it really isn’t. Just be aware that people notice everything you do, don't do, say or not say and think of the message that you're trying to convey in networking situations and whether that comment really needs to be said or whether that acting out really needs to be done or whether you can just put it aside and be an adult . . . Which I clearly wasn't.

You get what I needed out of the situation which, for me, was more connection with some of the people the room so I can work with them afterwards. I made a mistake and I am trying to head you are from a career or job search mistake that that happens way too often.

You go into a networking meeting. You're off on the sidelines. You feel frustrated. You don't communicate with anyone. You send the message of being aloof, instead of being connected.

You were there to network. Get into the conversation. You know how to do that. Seriously, you know how to do that. Even if you are a beginner, you kinda sidle your way over and start standing on the sidelines. Have your face seen and notice how the conversation is and then contribute something positive to it that moves it forward at the right time. You know what that is. I don't have to tell you that.

So, this is a mistake I made. I hope you don't make it.

Networking Mistakes: Not Enough Done In Person and Unreasonable Expectations

EP 1388 This is the first in a series that I will be doing about networking mistakes people make.

This is a video where it doesn't really matter whether you're thinking of a from the standpoint of being a business owner, a job hunter, a friend. People make mistakes with your networking. I'm going to do a series that talks about some of the things that people mistakenly do that adversely affects the success of the networking that they do And causes them to go, "Ah! Networking doesn't work! It's ridiculous!"

Mistake number 1 is that you do everything online and never really talked to anyone. I know the trend really started with email. People used to write letters to individuals and stay in touch. In that way. We've gotten to the point where he never hear one another's voice or see anyone and thus the will heartfelt connection Between people that causes is a relationship to grow doesn't really exist. In one way, you may feel warmly or in a kindly way toward someone but not enough to really take action. That's really what you're looking for, whether it's in your personal life or your professional life, You want some sort of action to occur. It just doesn't happen without the personal connection.

I recognize that all of us have relationships that are all over the country now and it may be impossible to do it face-to-face and in person now. There is Skype and FaceTime and other tools now Where you can see one another and talk to one another. It makes a difference.

I know there are friends of mine. I have not seen in years. We will talk.. We will Skype. We will do a number of different things to stay in contact.It's wonderful! That's mistake number 1 I wanted to call attention to.

Number 2, Let me go to professional level. People have unrealistic expectations. Whether is the impact that what they do on LinkedIn or on Facebook or in person, They may think that people are going to drop everything that they're doing and help them. They may not completely believe this but they hope this. It doesn't really work that way. If you're only communicating with people at times when you have a need rather than having a relationship, they probably won't be really motivated to take action. In addition, if you are doing that,People have lives to pull them in lots of different directions.

Normally, it takes several touches over the course of time to really get your network going. Don't be surprised if there is no instant response to you reaching you. Don't get angry. Don't get to stall. Don't get annoyed. Don't throw your hands up as I did before and complain that networking doesn't work. It does work.. It's just that you haven't been doing it right. You can correct this mistake.

EP 1385 A question from someone about accepting a job offer for less money than you want.

Summary

The question I was asked, "Should I accept less money?" I want to start off by saying that my bias is against doing it. I also want to lay out cases where it makes sense. There aren't many, but there are a few instances where it does make sense. But going back to the conclusion I believe the general you don't do it.

The few circumstances where it makes sense are:

1. The great opportunity. To me, there are relatively few great opportunities but I am not in your seat and don't live your life. You have to decide what a great opportunity is for you that would cause you to accept less. For the person making $100,000 a year, for the person making $200,000 a year, the notion of accepting a few dollars less for the "great opportunity" may not be a big deal. For the person making $50,000 a year, it is a different story. But that person you have to weigh the alternatives and come to your decision about whether it's worth your while.

2. If you been out of work for a long time. For you, you have a job right now and you don't have a career. You been out of work for 6, 8, 9, 12 months… Longer? Someone is making a job offer to you for less money than you earned "back when" you have a job or career right now. It's over. The fact it's that someone is willing to give you a shot after so many people have turned you down… That's a circumstance to consider it.

Understand though that often firms are negotiating.

They will talk about the individual who they've met with who is looking really strong and we are weighing the 2 of you and this person is willing to accept less. That's 1 of the classics and areas the firms dredge up. That's 1 of the classic scenarios that firms used to finesse you into accepting less money.

Frankly, I would turn around and say, "Thanks for bringing that to my attention. The fact is that if you believe this is a better person for this role, you should really choose them. If we are really equal and they are willing to accept less, you should choose them. For me, I look at it as, "I cost more but I bring greater productivity. If I haven't convinced you of that yet, talk with me about the perceived differences between us and let's address that." The fact that they are raising. This is the subject indicates that it is close. They do see a difference between the 2 of you; otherwise they would try to bring you down to that price point. After all, why bother to have this conversation. They could have just chosen the other person.

That's a factor. They are using a negotiating ploy.

Another factor that you need to take into consideration it is not about accepting $5000 or $10,000 less now, it is that accepting less money affects every dollar you ever earn for that firm and every other firm from now on, All because you accepted less money now. They build their raises based on what you are currently earning, right?

Using simple numbers, if you accept $5000 less now or are making $110,000 and accept $100,000, if you get a 5% increase, you are now at $105,000. Had you been at $110,000, the race would have been higher, right? Understand that there is an impact now and when you change jobs from a few years in the future, 2 or 3 years from now. After all, they are formulating their increases based upon what you are currently earning.

For now, in Massachusetts, that will become different next year, when a law goes into effect prohibiting employers from asking about your salary. For most organizations in most parts of the country, they are basing wage increases on current salary. They don't care that you took $10,000 less to join your current firm. They work off the current numbers because that's a fact. Understand there's an impact upon you that you will never recover from.

As you can tell, generally, I am against accepting less money. If it means so much to an organization that you accept $5000 or $10,000 less, there is a bigger problem there in terms of how your marketing yourself that you need to address.

Generally, thumbs down to the notion of accepting less except in the circumstances that I've already outlined..

The Self Assessment Profile for The Executive Search Firm | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 1372 If you want to play in the big leagues, you will probably need to change your thinking about the self-assessment the executive search firm sends to you.

Summary

I want to talk with you folks today, particularly if you are a senior professional, and are working with an executive search firm. To be clear, I'm not talking about a contingency firm that is saying to you, "we do executive search, too." I'm talking about the real deal firms. You're up for an SVP role or a C suite position of some kind and you're dealing with "the big boys," and "the big girls." Often, they will send the document to you that requires a self-assessment. How do you respond to this?

I had a conversation with someone I coach received a three-page document that he was asked to complete before he met the partner who is responsible for the search. His 1st reaction was to blow through it pretty quickly. I said, "Stop! Your job here is to make the case for your candidacy. They have developed a specification for the client. They sat down with them and met them. You spoken with the head of corporate HR prior to speaking with them. You have an advantage over some of the others. But, at the end of the day, they use this is a legitimate screening tool AND it can be used as the basis for their presentation of you to their client for how you fit. Why would you blow through this?"

I decided and persuaded him to take this three-page document and turn it into 7 - 8 pages in length. It's more than 100% increase in length, not being on the questions that seem pretty straightforward (questions like, "what's your compensation?" How long is that going to take? 3 lines? 4 lines?") but on questions that go to the heart of your ability to demonstrate how you fit the role and demonstrate your communications style.

If you want to blow through that, you are not ready for the big leagues. If you want to look this is the eyes of how the search firm is going to view you, not just simply by what you say but by what you don't say, but what you communicate, by what your style of communications is, then you are ready to play at this level.

Don't give short shrift to this because in the past you were less experience than thought this was a trivial exercise and thought someone should call you and talk to you. To play in the big leagues you have to deal with how the big boys and big girls want to be dealt with. They want your best take on how your background fits in. You're going to take the time to reflect and answer the questions in detail to give them great material to make the case for why you fit this role.

DON'T BLOW IT because there is nothing worse from your vantage point, then to not take something like this seriously and then wind up losing an opportunity because you were dismissive of it. That's a mistake. Don't make it.

EP 1354 What kind of places are you thinking of?  Government agencies?  Recruiters?  Nonprofit groups?’ 

Summary

The question for today is, "Are there places in every state to help you find the job?" 

It depends on what you mean by the word, "places."  After all, I'm sure there are recruiters in every state that will help you find the job.  There are people that will help you find a job.  If you mean government agencies, which is what I suspect you are asking about, yes, I'm sure there are agencies that do occupational training and, perhaps, an Office of Employment and Training that will help you find work.  It used to be called Unemployment.  These agencies will "help you find a job."  

What did they really do?  They will point you to a computer, tell you to do a search on their website and other websites to identify positions.

Do you think that's the way that's the way to help you find the job?
They may have pamphlets and other material for you to read (and probably not follow through on) that are designed to help you find the job, but are basic.

If you are the beginner level in your job search, you may need that kind of material to help you find work.

If you are a more experienced person, respectfully, , what I have seen of the information that is provided won't be good enough to help you. Certainly, they are not going to go out and "find jobs for you." Their job is to process people, not help you find the job.

Thus, the answer the question is, "it depends." For most individuals, it is very basic stuff that won't help you very much.

What you need to do take charge of your career, learn what you need to in order to find work now and in the future, and think of your career as a business that you own, not a him bdicated 2 other people.

It's kind of like investing in mutual funds – – you handle your money to other people who you think no better, but do they really? Or a financial adviser? Do you think some of them really know better?

At the end of the day, you may not get a lot out of these Office of Training facilities and other places that the government has set up. You will get some amount of advice from recruiting firms. You can find people who can help you. There are nonprofit groups that can help. But you need to be in charge of your career,

How Do You Get a Job After Being Self Employed for 20 Years? | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 1353 This scenario happens pretty frequently , and if it is happening to you now, I hope you find this helpful.

Summary

"How do you get a new job after being self-employed for 20 years?"
As many of my answers go, it depends.

It depends on the field that you are in. The answer is going to be different if you owned a retail store versus being an insurance broker versus being a contract consultant working in a number of clients. Let me give some general answers that will be part of the framework.

Assuming you are not a self-employed contractor type, that you have owned the business for a number of years, the idea is to take advantage of a number of the resources that you have that the average individual isn't going to have.

For example, you have a relationship with an accountants and he or she has relationships with other accountants, your networking should start with your accounting firm, your audit firm, your CPA… "I'm thinking of closing up and I think it's time for me to find a job. Please keep your eyes and ears open for me for other opportunities." If they're smart, they will.

Vendors
Start with your accountant, your insurance agent, all the vendors that you've worked with, make it clear that you're not going bankrupt and that you will be a deadbeat with your bills and asked them to introduce you to people who might be interested in what you do.

So you start with professionals and then you start to go to your extended network. 

For example, if you belong to a BNI chapter and speak to the other members that you're thinking of hanging it up, they will help you a lot, they will be an antenna for you in your local community for helping you get introductions.

Tell everyone – – friends, neighbors-- there is no embarrassment anymore. What you are doing is using your network of relationships in order to receive introductions to others.

There is a classic story and job hunting that I heard many years ago whose cleaning person introduce someone to her husband, who is the president of a bank. The reason the person was cleaning homes was as part of the spiritual practice. She didn't need the money but wanted to maintain humility.  Eventually, the person gave her resume, after all, this was the cleaning person and he didn't know her husband was the head of a bank.  After all, who could she possibly know they could help him?

That's why you tell everyone. You tell your banker (not the idiot at the desk. The person that you had a relationship with for a number of years, not the rotating 24-year-old who sits at a desk and opens accounts; obviously, there is a difference between the stereotype of the 24-year-old that I just used and others who are extraordinary). Start talking to everyone, making sure that they know.

Obviously, at some point you will need a resume. In constructing the resume, you will want to think, not in terms of being an owner, because, as an owner, unless you are buying another business or manage another business, you will be joining in a staff for all and, depending upon the staff role that you are interviewing for, make sure that your resume speaks to that part of your background.

So, lots of dynamics here and I want to offer a few points I thought might help.

EP 1351 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains why you should pay attention when a recruiter contacts you about a job opportunity. 

Summary

Today I want to talk with you about what I'll nickname don't delete the recruiter. Let me explain what triggers this one,
Every time I get a new requirement, I have a database and I'll send an email out to people in my database who fit the skills requirement. And I'll just very simply say, "I'm doing a search for a client, describe what the client is or does, where they're located. I'll describe the position and the compensation. I'll continued by saying, "it's been a long time since we've been in contact. I thought it would drop a note to you and see if you might be interested. If you're qualified, interested in available please email me email a copy of your resume to me at . . . "and I provide my email address.
Now, often way too often, I receive a response that is almost the yelling at me.
"I told you to delete my email address before. Or it'll say, "get rid of this," or it will just simply say, "remove," you know, the polite version of go away.
That's okay. That however, is why I want to explain to you why it's not really in your interest to do any of those.
What I want to start with the premise that I think you can agree with is the person who gets ahead isn't always the smartest, they don't always work the hardest, although those are two great qualities to have. People could head by being alert to opportunity. Sometimes, those opportunities are internal to the organization. More often than not, they are external. Can you agree with that?
If you can, you can skip the rest of this video. If you can't, then I'll simply say you can't predict when opportunity is going to land in your lap. It won't necessarily arrive at a time where you decide that it's the right time. What you can do is just remain alert.
Now, you'll receive many emails from recruiters. They'll seem absolutely wrong. And I'll speak of myself early in my career where, again, I'be been doing this for more than 40 years. Now, when I was in my first or second year and sometimes later, I would contact someone who in no way shape or form fit a job because I just didn't know any better. I'm still learning my craft.
And yet at the same time, many of these opportunities I presented, eventually, whether it be right for someone, does that mean you should be abusive to the recruiter if they make a mistake or if they contact you at the wrong time? No, of course, not. Does that mean that you have to say yes to everything that's offered up to you. Of course, not. However, the only way you can know about these opportunities is if you read the email or listen to the phone, call that you get.
Sometimes, you'll want to take another step. Sometimes you'll simply say (and this is all you have to say) is, "I'm not interested in this. It doesn't sound like a worthwhile opportunity for me at this time. Thanks. You can stay in touch with other things. I'm not aggressively looking. But if you think there's something that makes sense, give me a call or send me an email." It's really that simple.
Because, again, if someone said to you and I'll use my own name, "Jeff, I have an opportunity for you to go on TV and be a reality star doing a pilot for show on TV, do you think I would hang up? No, of course, not. I would want to know more. I might audition; I might do more.
But if I wasn't interested, all I had to do is say, "you know, thank you. I'm very flattered that you reached out to me it doesn't seem like something I'd want to do."
