EP 1354 What kind of places are you thinking of?  Government agencies?  Recruiters?  Nonprofit groups?’ 

Summary

The question for today is, "Are there places in every state to help you find the job?" 

It depends on what you mean by the word, "places."  After all, I'm sure there are recruiters in every state that will help you find the job.  There are people that will help you find a job.  If you mean government agencies, which is what I suspect you are asking about, yes, I'm sure there are agencies that do occupational training and, perhaps, an Office of Employment and Training that will help you find work.  It used to be called Unemployment.  These agencies will "help you find a job."  

What did they really do?  They will point you to a computer, tell you to do a search on their website and other websites to identify positions.

Do you think that's the way that's the way to help you find the job?
They may have pamphlets and other material for you to read (and probably not follow through on) that are designed to help you find the job, but are basic.

If you are the beginner level in your job search, you may need that kind of material to help you find work.

If you are a more experienced person, respectfully, , what I have seen of the information that is provided won't be good enough to help you. Certainly, they are not going to go out and "find jobs for you." Their job is to process people, not help you find the job.

Thus, the answer the question is, "it depends." For most individuals, it is very basic stuff that won't help you very much.

What you need to do take charge of your career, learn what you need to in order to find work now and in the future, and think of your career as a business that you own, not a him bdicated 2 other people.

It's kind of like investing in mutual funds – – you handle your money to other people who you think no better, but do they really? Or a financial adviser? Do you think some of them really know better?

At the end of the day, you may not get a lot out of these Office of Training facilities and other places that the government has set up. You will get some amount of advice from recruiting firms. You can find people who can help you. There are nonprofit groups that can help. But you need to be in charge of your career,

EP 1353 This scenario happens pretty frequently , and if it is happening to you now, I hope you find this helpful.

Summary

"How do you get a new job after being self-employed for 20 years?"
As many of my answers go, it depends.

It depends on the field that you are in. The answer is going to be different if you owned a retail store versus being an insurance broker versus being a contract consultant working in a number of clients. Let me give some general answers that will be part of the framework.

Assuming you are not a self-employed contractor type, that you have owned the business for a number of years, the idea is to take advantage of a number of the resources that you have that the average individual isn't going to have.

For example, you have a relationship with an accountants and he or she has relationships with other accountants, your networking should start with your accounting firm, your audit firm, your CPA… "I'm thinking of closing up and I think it's time for me to find a job. Please keep your eyes and ears open for me for other opportunities." If they're smart, they will.

Vendors
Start with your accountant, your insurance agent, all the vendors that you've worked with, make it clear that you're not going bankrupt and that you will be a deadbeat with your bills and asked them to introduce you to people who might be interested in what you do.

So you start with professionals and then you start to go to your extended network. 

For example, if you belong to a BNI chapter and speak to the other members that you're thinking of hanging it up, they will help you a lot, they will be an antenna for you in your local community for helping you get introductions.

Tell everyone – – friends, neighbors-- there is no embarrassment anymore. What you are doing is using your network of relationships in order to receive introductions to others.

There is a classic story and job hunting that I heard many years ago whose cleaning person introduce someone to her husband, who is the president of a bank. The reason the person was cleaning homes was as part of the spiritual practice. She didn't need the money but wanted to maintain humility.  Eventually, the person gave her resume, after all, this was the cleaning person and he didn't know her husband was the head of a bank.  After all, who could she possibly know they could help him?

That's why you tell everyone. You tell your banker (not the idiot at the desk. The person that you had a relationship with for a number of years, not the rotating 24-year-old who sits at a desk and opens accounts; obviously, there is a difference between the stereotype of the 24-year-old that I just used and others who are extraordinary). Start talking to everyone, making sure that they know.

Obviously, at some point you will need a resume. In constructing the resume, you will want to think, not in terms of being an owner, because, as an owner, unless you are buying another business or manage another business, you will be joining in a staff for all and, depending upon the staff role that you are interviewing for, make sure that your resume speaks to that part of your background.

So, lots of dynamics here and I want to offer a few points I thought might help.

EP 1351 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains why you should pay attention when a recruiter contacts you about a job opportunity. 

Summary

Today I want to talk with you about what I'll nickname don't delete the recruiter. Let me explain what triggers this one,
Every time I get a new requirement, I have a database and I'll send an email out to people in my database who fit the skills requirement. And I'll just very simply say, "I'm doing a search for a client, describe what the client is or does, where they're located. I'll describe the position and the compensation. I'll continued by saying, "it's been a long time since we've been in contact. I thought it would drop a note to you and see if you might be interested. If you're qualified, interested in available please email me email a copy of your resume to me at . . . "and I provide my email address.
Now, often way too often, I receive a response that is almost the yelling at me.
"I told you to delete my email address before. Or it'll say, "get rid of this," or it will just simply say, "remove," you know, the polite version of go away.
That's okay. That however, is why I want to explain to you why it's not really in your interest to do any of those.
What I want to start with the premise that I think you can agree with is the person who gets ahead isn't always the smartest, they don't always work the hardest, although those are two great qualities to have. People could head by being alert to opportunity. Sometimes, those opportunities are internal to the organization. More often than not, they are external. Can you agree with that?
If you can, you can skip the rest of this video. If you can't, then I'll simply say you can't predict when opportunity is going to land in your lap. It won't necessarily arrive at a time where you decide that it's the right time. What you can do is just remain alert.
Now, you'll receive many emails from recruiters. They'll seem absolutely wrong. And I'll speak of myself early in my career where, again, I'be been doing this for more than 40 years. Now, when I was in my first or second year and sometimes later, I would contact someone who in no way shape or form fit a job because I just didn't know any better. I'm still learning my craft.
And yet at the same time, many of these opportunities I presented, eventually, whether it be right for someone, does that mean you should be abusive to the recruiter if they make a mistake or if they contact you at the wrong time? No, of course, not. Does that mean that you have to say yes to everything that's offered up to you. Of course, not. However, the only way you can know about these opportunities is if you read the email or listen to the phone, call that you get.
Sometimes, you'll want to take another step. Sometimes you'll simply say (and this is all you have to say) is, "I'm not interested in this. It doesn't sound like a worthwhile opportunity for me at this time. Thanks. You can stay in touch with other things. I'm not aggressively looking. But if you think there's something that makes sense, give me a call or send me an email." It's really that simple.
Because, again, if someone said to you and I'll use my own name, "Jeff, I have an opportunity for you to go on TV and be a reality star doing a pilot for show on TV, do you think I would hang up? No, of course, not. I would want to know more. I might audition; I might do more.
But if I wasn't interested, all I had to do is say, "you know, thank you. I'm very flattered that you reached out to me it doesn't seem like something I'd want to do."

How Do I Get a New Job When My Manager is Giving Bad Reference? | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 1349 A job hunter who is learning  that references matter asks what s/he can do When his manager is getting a bad reference.

Summary

The question for today is, "How do I get a new job. When my manager is giving up that references about me?"

Before I answer the question, I want you to learn a lesson- -Don't put yourself in that position. You discovered how difficult it is to find work when the best person to evaluate you is not in your corner.  They are not your ally.

Whether the issue is around bad behavior in the office, whether the issue is around poor performance or excessive lateness is, this all comes back to bite you in the butt.  This person is not an ally or willing to lie for you, they are not going to stick to a story.  You are going to need to find someone else to do it for you.  Maybe a former coworker will (the key word in that is former); maybe a former manager -- someone who predates your current manager who can attest to your work.

Let's assume that you were fired for poor performance.  Why would your firm give out a good reference?  After all, they fired you because you did a bad job. Understand that firms will comply with one another about confirming dates of employment.  They're not going to lie about things related to your work with them.

You can go to HR (and I think this would be the smart move) and ask whether the firm has a policy against providing references because, frankly, "Mine will be poor and I don't want to be in a position where I have to sue because the impact of the reference your firm provides is going to keep me from finding work. I don't believe I should be punished for the rest of my life for mistakes I made. I'm sure you don't want to deal with litigation. What I would like to have everyone cautioned about is that it is not company policy to give references out we can confirm dates of employment."  That can get you off the hook.

You still need to get people who will talk about you and say that they are a former colleague, former manager… Stuff along those lines… And talk positively about you.

What Are Some Good Ways to Turn Down a Counteroffer? | NoBSJobSearchAdvice.com

EP 1360  I describe a scenario that someone faces where they need to turn down a counteroffer… And it is very painful.

Summary

Someone wrote to me about how to best turn down a counteroffer and I am compelled to give you some texture to this so that you can understand the dilemma this person has.

The person is happy in their current job, but they were recruited by a foreign firm that offer them a salary double what they are currently earning.

Wow!

But we don't know if this is a $40,000 a year person who has been offered $80,000, a $100,000 a year person who has been offered $200,000… We have no sense of the numbers.

They really like the job and found it very interesting, they love the money and gave notice. At this point, the persons manager does their version of, "But why? We love you! Don't go! We need you! Don't do anything yet. I'm going to talk to my boss."

His boss is the owner of the firm and comes back to the job hunter (as I am recording this, it is November) and says to the job hunter, "we are going to be able to pay you much more (but not as much money as the other offers for)."

In the position with the foreign firm, the person can work from home, and double the money.

It is an interesting choice for the person but after some weighing alternatives, he or she has decided to turn down the counteroffer. What are some good ways to do this?

I want to address one detail head on. If this is the owner of the firm, what is going to change between now in November and December other than the fact that the other offer has been turned down. That will allow them to increase it then and not today?

I smell something unpleasant here but let's give him the benefit of the doubt.

You made a decision that you want to leave. Great. How do you turn down the counteroffer gracefully?

You sit down with your manager, you look them square in the ally and you say, "You know, I really spent a lot of time thinking about it and I decided that I am going to take the other offer and go."

Because you are responsive to the counteroffer, they may try to take another run at you to try to persuade you to stay.

"Wait! Don't do anything yet! I'm going to bring in the owner. He or she is going to make a different!"

You know, create a big drama to try to stop you.

So if and when this trauma occurs with the president of the firm, all I want you to calmly say is, "Look, I've no complaints about this firm. You guys have been great to me but this is my time to go. And if I discover that I made a mistake,.I will have weighed the alternatives and I will learn something from it."

They may turn around and try to exert pressure on you. Thus I want to remind you that you need to speak with a very calm tone, sounding like you are reflecting. "This is been a hard decision to make and I hear you. Please respect my choice."

"I'm giving 2 weeks notice. I'm sure you can find someone to do the job within 2 weeks. Just go out there and try; after all, there are people out there looking for work. I'm sure someone is qualified to do the job."

Just maintain your calm and, if for some reason, they get under your skin, PLEASE do not react. Do not be reactive and lashing out.

Try to maintain your cool and simply say, "Again, we are going around in a circle here. I have made up my mind. Please respect my choice."

Stand up. Shake their hands and leave.

EP 1319 Should I call up recruiters directly to ask them to find me a job, or wait for them to call me?

Summary

The question for today is, "Should I call up recruiters directly to ask them to find me a job or wait for them to call me?"

I'm not sure what you think recruiters do...When you are calling them up, are you paying them anything for this? And you expect them to "find you a job?" Seriously, when you say, "find you a job," you have the equation all wrong.

The equation for a recruiter, headhunter, any professional that is in the employment business is they are there to fill jobs and get paid for their efforts. They are not there to "find you a job" except coincidentally in that process. So, in terms of waiting for them to call you, (1) See if you can identify people who work in your field. Seriously. Don't just call recruiters up at random; see if you can find people who work in your field.

(1a) See if they have any jobs open that fit your background. They are not there to find the job for you. They are there to fill a job with you or someone like you. I say it that way because if you act like a jerk, There is someone there who is not going to act like a jerk who they are going to work with To fill this position with because they don't want to get embarrassed in front of their client. That's because the client is going to stop calling them If there are too many people that they refer who act stupid.

So, you always want to be in the position where recruiters are contacting you. That's because it is clear that they have a role open that might fit you. You can always look at job ads on job boards for local newspapers, websites and a whole host of other places to find individual recruiters who have positions open that fit your background. Again, I want to be clear – – "that fit your background." Don't spam your resume and send it like so much garbage. They don't have time for this. If you do that you are Being like the people who spam them with Viagra ads that landed in their inbox all the time. It is just a colossal waste of time! To call them up and simply say, "Hey! I'm looking for a job,," It is no different than spam.

However, I don't want you to be passive. If you are in a professional field, what I want you to do Is have a quality LinkedIn profile that is keyword optimized So that you attract recruiters who have positions open for someone like you. You want to have your resume on a job born because that can ask you pretty wide net to people who are looking for people like you. You want to have your resume on Indeed, SimplyHired and Other sites in order to draw people to you who have positions open AND you want to be setting up search agents on different job boards so that they notify you When positions get listed. You want to be out there networking.

If you're not in a professional field, networking can take a different form. For example, if you are a recent grad you can go on LinkedIn, go across the ribbon on the top and see alumni from your school who may be a year or 2 ahead of you and you network with them. In blue-collar work, you can network with people you have worked with previouslyAnd see if they know about a position.

However, to call up a recruiter out of the blue To find a job for you? You are just kidding yourself.
