Meet Up with People to Network With | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter encourages you to look beyond LinkedIn with your networking efforts.

Summary

For most of you, you have gotten lazy and use LinkedIn as your exclusive networking tool. . It doesn't do enough for you to have the interpersonal communications that are necessary for people to trust that they can refer you.

Yes, you can collect lots of information from LinkedIn; however, it is hard to do. The relationship building, you need to do.

Here's another way of doing it.

When I think of networking, I think of meeting people person to person. 1 of the best ways of doing that is with Meetup groups. Finding Meetup that relates to your area of interest in your geographic area of choice. Attend some meetings. Participate. Talk to the person who runs the MeetUp. You develop a relationship with them. Be friendly.

Suddenly, in a few months, people want to help you. That's really what the networking is all about-- connecting with people so that they want to help you because they like you. They trust you. They believe that you know what you claim to know so they refer you.

When all is said and done, LinkedIn is great. Don't neglect MeetUps. They are a terrific way to make the connections that are necessary in order to get yourself in front of firms.

Review: Networking Basics: 8 Tips to Networking WIthout Appearing Fake


I review this YouTube video as well as summarize the content.

Summary

Today, I want to do a review of a video I saw on YouTube that was done by Marie Forleo, who is a terrific marketer, terrific information provider. Everything that I've heard about Marie is terrific. So I don't want to make it seem like, in reviewing this, my intention is to go out of my way to beat her up. She doesn't deserve that at all. She's a terrific advocate for people. So, the video is called "Networking Basics: 8 Tips to Networking Without Being Fake."
Now, I want to stop by saying this is a networking Basics video. So, it covers the obvious points in networking, but it has her own twist to it. I think they're quite good. So let me start by saying the most important thing that she says early on, the one thing that I think most people will overlook when they think about it, is that networking is an ongoing organic process. It is not something that you do once every two years when we are changing jobs or when you need something from someone it's something that has to be part of your repertoire so that, in this way, you don't appear like a mooch. You are developing relationships with people which is really what networking is all about.
So, she then continues by going through her 8 points. I'm just going to go through them quickly. Networking involves focusing on giving, rather than getting. Introducing people. Doing things to share with them without any expectation of anything in return. You need to be present is her second point and that, when you're meeting someone at a networking scenario, don't be looking behind them. I'm trying to do that now to illustrate. Don't be looking behind them to see who else is there who you might go to next. Be present with the individual. She tells a great story in the course of illustrating this point.
Listen more than you talk and she uses the metaphor of two ears /one mouth as part of teaching us. Always think in terms of the long term. It's not a short term situation which to me is kind of redundant with her big point which (networking) is an ongoing organic process.
Don't overcommit and feel guilty is her fifth point. By that is promising more than you can really deliver at that particular time.
Number six is be honest. No false promises offered. If you have no intention of getting in touch with this person ever again and they are looking to set up a time to speak, it's really easy to go, "Okay, no problem. Give me a call," and never respond and that makes you look terrible. Better to simply say, "I am booked solid. Could you bear with me and I'll see if I can get to you," or "I don't know when I'm going to wind up having time," and just kind of push them away from the immediacy to a time later on.
If you are interested in networking with them, take action immediately. So, if you've promised to do something for someone, you can do it on your phone, right? A lot of things you can handle immediately, like within five minutes of leaving the conversation that creates a great impression. At the latest, if you're meeting them at a conference, in a trade show, at a networking event, do it when we get home. Don't push it off when you might risk forgetting about it. Give yourself a memo on your phone to remind you to take this action.
Lastly, I think this is an important one, only go to events that excite you. Only go to make friends. If your reason for going to a networking event is to take, if you're not really interested in the subject of the event at the conference, don't go! At the end of the day, you have to do things to please yourself and not fixate on the connection. Afterall, the game plan in networking is to make friends and to build a partnership with someone, not just go gimme, gimme,gimme,gimme,gimme.
Her video was good, but it's basic and that was the intention. So, for those of you who are new and or uncomfortable with networking, (thumbs up)

Is what I want to tell you. It isn't just networking that's important. Everyone is out there networking these days. The bums, the losers, the mediocre people are all out there networking, too.

What are you going to do in order to stand out?

Standing out isn't about doing it in your job search. It is about doing it every day in your career. How to be the leader? How to be the person who is the best? I do certain things to stand out in how I present myself. I do with my videos. I do with my podcasts. I do with my e-zines… A whole host of different ways that job hunters and hiring managers get a sense of how I think and how I operate. That has really profited me.

In your career, what can you do to stand out in your workplace? How can you be the leader in your organization, even if you are a staff person? How can you demonstrate your leadership and commitment to excellence that allows you to stand out from the losers and the bums and the mediocre people so that people will go, "Hey! This person is really good!"

That's really the strategy for you when you're networking. It isn't just simply about doing it between job searches; it's a career objective. Where can you write? What trade groups can you become a part of and contribute to. Where can you be the leader in your life that is going to cause you to stand out from the mediocrity that exists out there.

Icebreakers at Networking Meetings | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter provides you with two easy to use Icebreakers to employ at networking meetings. 

Summary

Today, I’m going to talk with you about meeting people at a network group meeting.

You know the usual routine at these meetings. You walk into a room; there are a lot of people there and you don't really know anyone. You are supposed to mingle. So, you can talk about yourself and that’s always awkward but I have simple advice.

Instead, when you walk into a room with a group people, you can do a couple of different things. #1, in the course of mingling, you have a conversation starter. In this way, when you walk over to an absolute stranger. You have never met them before; if you know the US dating scene, you may remember this stereotypical question of, “hi! Do you come here often?” You can try that line on people.

My personal favorite is, “So, what's your interest in being here? Why are you here?”

What I have learned over the course of time is the more people talk about themselves, the more they like you. Being a great listener allows you to really learn about the other person and then, like in boxing, you counterpunch. You throw in some ideas. Eventually they ask you about yourself or you voluntarily talk about yourself, but always make about the other person first.

2 simple ways to meet others.

“Do you come here often,” and then if they start talking to talking to that answer, you can you can joke with them. “So, what's your sign?” After all, we are meeting at the bar here.” “I remember these days from when I was younger,” or is you just make a joke out of it so, in this way, people know that you are being facetious.

Then, finally, “What’s you're interested being here? What are you hoping to get out this,” or “what's your background,” and ask them about their work. That is just a smoother question to ask them about what their interest is in being here.

Conversation Starters When Networking


In this video, I discuss a few conversation starters for shy people, introverts and others to get you started.

Summary

There are a lot of people who are very shy. they consider themselves introverts. So I thought I would do a show about networking that will encourage you to start doing conversations with people. After all, whether you are at a formal networking event, with your meeting someone outside of work and you want to work on developing relationship with someone, to me, this is all networking. Thus, putting yourself in the position where you can have conversations freely goes a long way toward building your business, building your career. Here are a few ways to start:

You are going to find this 1 amazing. This is the magic one. The number 1 way to start a conversation with someone, walk over to them and say, "Hi!" Or "Hello!" And, if you are the networking event, continue by saying, "What brought you here?" Or, "What attracted you about this meeting tonight?" What you're doing is starting the conversation.

A variation on this is, you have been there for a little while you see someone there off in a corner. They are even more shy than you are. Walk over to them and say, "Hi!" What you're doing is beginning the conversation with them. It encourages them to open up a little bit.

Another thing you can do is make a joke. "You know, I love the food with these things. What about you?" There is no networking event I have ever been to where the food is just going to cause people to stop in their tracks and go, "Wow! This is incredible!" It all tends to be mediocre crap. Making a joke like, "I come here for the food. It's incredible!" Then, roll your eyes and you will probably start the conversation with laughter.

You can complement some. "Hey! Great tie!" Or, "I love your shoes. Or something else that complements appearance goes a long way toward starting a conversation with someone.

That's what you're really doing is looking to start a conversation. "Have you come to meetings like this before?"

If you see a group of people talking with one another and you want to get involved but you don't want to overwhelm, you stand there and listen for a while and then popping a remark from the outside. That will start the process of engaging you a little bit in their conversation.

Those are a few ideas I have for how you can start networking with people at formal events or in formal situations where you might run into someone.

Conversation Starters When Networking

I discuss a few conversation starters for shy people, introverts and others to get you started.

Summary

There are a lot of people who are very shy. they consider themselves introverts. So I thought I would do a show about networking that will encourage you to start doing conversations with people. After all, whether you are at a formal networking event, with your meeting someone outside of work and you want to work on developing relationship with someone, to me, this is all networking. Thus, putting yourself in the position where you can have conversations freely goes a long way toward building your business, building your career. Here are a few ways to start:

You are going to find this 1 amazing. This is the magic one. The number 1 way to start a conversation with someone, walk over to them and say, "Hi!" Or "Hello!" And, if you are the networking event, continue by saying, "What brought you here?" Or, "What attracted you about this meeting tonight?" What you're doing is starting the conversation.

A variation on this is, you have been there for a little while you see someone there off in a corner. They are even more shy than you are. Walk over to them and say, "Hi!" What you're doing is beginning the conversation with them. It encourages them to open up a little bit.

Another thing you can do is make a joke. "You know, I love the food with these things. What about you?" Who Should You Network With to Find a Job? (VIDEO)

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter tells you exactly who you should be networking with to find a job.

Summary

Today's question is, "we all know that networking is the primary way that people find jobs." You do know that, don't you? As a matter of fact, the statistics show job boards fill about 6% of all positions. Recruiters fill about 20%. There is overlap in those 2 numbers because recruiters may find a resume from a job board. Let's get job boards total credit. They fill 26% of all positions. The rest of filled networking. The question becomes who do you network with? How do you find that who the right person is for your next job?

The question of who you should network with is really easy. The answer is EVERYONE! EVERYONE you come into contact with should be someone that you networking with. I'm not telling you to have a conversation with your butcher and say to them, "Hey! I'm trying to find the job," because all that's going to happen is are going to think you can afford what you buying.

I'm telling you that there are so many people that you come into contact with you could be talking with about what it is that you do and just say, "If you know of someone or could point me to someone, it would be really great."

My favorite story about networking comes from someone who runs a networking group. He tells a story about someone in his group that lost their job with 1 of the banks. Is cleaning person overheard the conversation he was having with someone over the phone and asked whether she could have a copy of his resume. Thinking that she was ONLY a cleaning person, he could've pooh-poohed the request and then give her the resume. She asked again about a week later and he still didn't do it. Finally, she asked his wife and the wife came to him and said, "Would you give her a copy of the resume? It's only a piece of paper."

As it turns out, her husband, ran a large group at another bank. She worked as a cleaning person as part of her religious practice of humility and, as a result, he found his next job was cleaning person.

There are people that you know at your church, synagogue or mosque . . . Temple . . . Any number of places who can be of help to you. You need to make people aware. It isn't about telling people that you're looking for work is a critical mistake. Not telling folks that you're connected with on LinkedIn that you can use some help is a huge mistake. Unless people know that you need help, they are not going to help you.

A great story from a few years ago . . So I know work at the old Merrill Lynch and I listen to an audio tape that they used to give to their top performers. These are the top salespeople who worked at the old Merrill Lynch. Huge performers! Great salespeople! They had this trainer who they flew out to Hawaii to meet with the top 1/10 of 1% of all salespeople at Merrill Lynch and he says to them, "How would you like me to increase your business and will only take about 6 seconds? 6 seconds that you can invest in every phone call." They all look around and think to themselves, "6 seconds and you can increase your business by 8%? That would be terrific!"

"You in the front row. Time this. Here's what you have to say in every call. 'Is there anyone else you know who I can be helping?'"

For you, you want to be helping people and also want to be sure that they know that you can use some help. You just want to simply say, "I just want to remind you that I am looking for a job. This is what I do. If you hear of something, don't hesitate to make me aware of it or point someone to me."

It's really simple and straightforward approach to networking. It's something that you can do all the time..
